Post-European Council: Statements (19 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: I know Brexit has been discussed here but I will concentrate on some of the other serious issues raised at the European Council meeting, particularly migration. The European Council agreed to continue to follow the EU's failed and disastrous migration policies to date. The EU is increasingly giving in to the demands of the far right. I agree with Deputy Micheál Martin that this is no...

Post-European Council: Statements (19 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: Fair play to the Deputy.

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (18 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: On speech and language supports, the current waiting time for the Dublin South-West school age team is 42 months. There are 80 waiting to go on the list and there are 297 on the list itself. I raised this six months ago and was told then the waiting time was 36 months. It is now 42 months. I am at a loss as to how to move this forward. I have contacted the Minister. I have talked to the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Update on Brexit and Matters Considered at Meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council: Discussion (13 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: The Minister is correct that we need to be seen as critical, fair and consistent. People would be somewhat surprised, however, by some of the statements issued following meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council. The Minister mentioned that the elections in Venezuela were neither free nor fair, but there was no mention of certain other elections, such as those in Bahrain on 24 November. As...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Update on Brexit and Matters Considered at Meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council: Discussion (13 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: I am not suggesting that demands be made. It is practical ways that Europe can help the Irish peace process.

Consumer Credit (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (12 Dec 2018)

Seán Crowe: The last speaker made a lot of sense in what he said. We are having this debate at 10.30 p.m. and it is supposed to finish at 11.30 p.m. It is almost like a dirty secret. I do not know about the rest of the Deputies but I think it is embarrassing that this practice is still going on in 21st century Ireland and that people are being forced to go to moneylenders and, in some cases, illegal...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Supplementary)
(29 Nov 2018)

Seán Crowe: I welcome the commitment to providing more funding to UNRRA, especially in the light of the US decision to stop funding for its vital work. The Minister of State mentioned an additional allocation of €2 million for the UN peace-building fund, and that it will coincide with Ireland's membership of the UN Secretary General's advisory group on peace building. Will the money be...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Supplementary)
(29 Nov 2018)

Seán Crowe: The work that has been done is transformative and it is changing people's lives. AIDS was the major challenge of the previous century and hugely positive work was done. Poverty is being reduced. A lot of this involves man-made crises, which is the frustrating thing for people watching at home and thinking "Here we have another conflict."

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2018
Vote 27 - International Co-operation (Supplementary)
(29 Nov 2018)

Seán Crowe: That is made by man and it is mainly men who are causing these conflicts. Hunger, inequality and disadvantage are all things which must be addressed. If we are playing a positive role and if Irish Aid funding is not tied to Government policy or anything else, that is key. It is transforming people's lives. Coming up with technologies which can double food production in a particular area...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Returning Irish Emigrants: Discussion (29 Nov 2018)

Seán Crowe: I welcome the witnesses. Does the Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas have a breakdown by country for the Irish prisoners in jail abroad? I am familiar with the difficulties experienced by Irish prisoners in prisons in Britain, with people being moved around, ghosting and so on. Even when the legislation was there allowing people to be transferred home, the British Government was...
