- Leaders' Questions. (19 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: I am not sure the Taoiseach appreciates the urgency of this matter. Whether the report and the target date of 2011 seemed fine, the date is not fine now. When the Taoiseach refers to private nursing homes, which seem to be seen as some form of panacea, does he not realise that 20 people were waiting for beds in the Mater Hospital just one hour ago? Some have been waiting since last Thursday....
- Order of Business. (19 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: In the context of the wider implications and the needs of this country in terms of accident and emergency shortfalls and the suffering in our hospitals, it is important that the probity of allocating so much money to what effectively is an industry and also an entertainment be dealt with not only by a committee with a narrow remit but in the Dáil by way of debate. For that reason I seek a...

- Order of Business. (19 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: I was simply hoping that the Taoiseach might take the opportunity to address the issue when replying. The charities regulation Bill has been promised since before I became a Member of the House. The Costello report goes back to 1990 and even the time of the hospital sweepstakes. Those hospitals that must raise extra funds to meet Exchequer shortfalls want to know when the Bill will be in place.

- Health Services: Motion. (12 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: I thank my Independent colleagues for this timely debate, particularly in light of the ESRI study which has so trenchantly criticised the health service. We wish the new Minister for Health and Children well in tackling the challenges she faces. However, notwithstanding her fine words about the heath service being accessible to every citizen regardless of wealth, she has a number of fears to...
- Order of Business. (12 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: I, too, would like this matter to return to the House as it refers, although not explicitly, to the Civil Service Commission and the dispersal of civil servants throughout the country. That there are only two people from the Civil Service Commission offering to be moved to Youghal to date indicates the need to examine closely whether Government policy has any basis, whether it will be...

- Order of Business. (12 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: I hope the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform might be consulted on the building control Bill as he might have some informed opinions on it. The health Bill, which is due this session, is certainly needed if a statutory framework is to be provided for complaints procedures in the health service. What is the progress on this legislation? Likewise, given that the ESRI is reminding us...
- Order of Business. (12 Oct 2004)
Trevor Sargent: It is very appropriate. The health and social care professionals Bill was supposed to be dealt with in the January legislative programme and, when that did not happen, in the Easter legislative programme. Is there a particular delay, the surmounting of which would allow it to be expedited? Why should it be further delayed?
