Over the past five years several Bills precluded local authority members from membership of various bodies, a point we fought against. It is akin to barring Senator Crown from a body being set up by the Government for cancer care simply because he is a Senator.

Maurice Cummins: Senator Darragh O'Brien and many other speakers welcomed the announcement by the Minister of a public inquiry into the treatment of Fr. Reynolds by RTE. The public consultation committee laid down times for those attending proceedings and its timetable will...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Ó Domhnaill's claim that we are confining the debate on the Bill to two and a half hours is incorrect. If the Senator had listened to my announcement on the Order of Business, he would have heard that the debate will resume after Private Members' time. The House will sit for as long as we can keep the Minister in the House after 7 p.m. I do not have any intention of guillotining...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Maurice Cummins: If Senators listened to the Order of Business, they would learn what was planned regarding Committee Stage. On Senator Bacik's contribution, we all welcome the release of Dr. Rafah Nached in Syria. We can have that debate in the context of the pre-budget submission next week. Everything is on the table. The country is in a deplorable state and many cuts will have be taken in every Department, as I have said on numerous occasions....

Maurice Cummins: My question relates to capital investment rather than to reform.

Seanad: Infrastructure and Capital Investment: Statements, Questions and Answers (22 Nov 2011)

Maurice Cummins: I refer to the Thornton Hall project which has been deferred. There are major problems in Mountjoy Prison which still maintains the Dickensian practice of slopping out. There are also major difficulties in St. Patrick's Institution. What measures in the capital programme will address those problems? In addition, there may be major problems in regard to Garda numbers. A certain number of...
