Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank Ms Cregg and Deputy Stanton will commence our questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: That is a very specific question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I have a number of questions. Ms Cregg stated that 90% of Travellers progress to third year in post-primary schools but the number who actually do the junior certificate is under 70%. My understanding is that students do their junior certificate after three years. This means that between going into third year of secondary school and actually completing it, we are losing 20%. Then...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I know that is just specific dormant account funding.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We have already established that 22% of the Traveller community get to the leaving certificate, which is 69% to 70% behind the rest of society. If islanders or Gaeltacht people, who are distinct communities, had that rate of disadvantage, we would focus specific extra funding in those areas. What we are talking about here is something that is available to everybody according to his or her...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank Ms Cregg and Mr. Doody very much for attending. Perhaps some time in the future they will be able to meet other committees in person. Unless any member has anything urgent to raise, that concludes our business for today. I ask members not to forget to forward their submissions on the draft report to the secretariat as soon as possible. At our next meeting on Tuesday, 23 November...

Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Bill 2021 [Seanad]: Second Stage (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire go dtí and Teach and I congratulate her on the birth of her son. I welcome this legislation because if it had not been introduced, we would be going over a cliff at the end of the month. This must be the beginning of moving forward on this matter because as we move through generations and life gets more complicated, the question of rights by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the witnesses for coming in and for the work they have done. I have to confess I have not yet read the 244 pages, although I will do so over Christmas, because a lot of stuff comes in all the time. There is a lot of daily work in this job and I just did not have the time with all the other commitments. Can Ms Feehily quantify the savings the Pensions Commission estimates because...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The commission seems to have fixed on 40 years' contributions. Does it have data on the percentage of people who came into a pension in the past year and have 40 years' contributions? I believe that number is smaller than our guests may think.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is important. This is about real people with real questions. They want to know how they are affected. They are not asking what the average is or whatever. It is like telling a person to go and get a suit in the average size. It might be too long or too short if one does that. I am interested to find out how many people actually would have got it if the 40 years' contributions was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I ask Ms Feehily to pass on those data.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The decision was made to raise it from €382 to €500.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is, obviously, out of €5,000------

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The flip side of it is that if one gets into that pension scheme for €500 a year at the same benefit as a PAYE employee who is earning €100,000 and pays 14% of that, or €14,000, into the fund, one is not doing too badly. It may be that the €38 figure is very low but that is-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The other argument is that if it is 4% but the person has to pay €5,000, it would be necessary to have a much higher self-employed income to qualify. Most people are happy to pay that €500.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: What is the actual saving?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: No, I am asking how much cash would be saved, in today's terms, by changing the age . Ms Roma Burke:The Deputy asked about older people working-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: My second question was how much is being saved by changing the age, just in actual payments.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Report of the Commission on Pensions: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I am referring to the proposals of the commission.
