- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: Do our guests expect it to cost €1 million per year to run, or that adequate funding will be made available from the board's resources to manage the fund in order that all the aspects Mr. Dollard identified as priorities will continue to be funded adequately?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: They are the priorities for funding-----

Thomas Pringle: -----and everything else is secondary to them.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: I do not know a pile about greyhounds but I wonder about the racing greyhounds about which our guests spoke in their opening statement. If a bitch or a dog has a litter, there might be only one racing greyhound in the litter. Is the whole litter the responsibility of the board or is it just the racing dog? Our guests might explain how that works.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: It is solely greyhounds for racing. I presume that not every greyhound is a racing greyhound.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: If I am a breeder of racing greyhounds, I might have to breed 20 or 30 pups to get one dog that will race. Is the board interested only in that one such dog?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: The entire litter is the responsibility of Bord na gCon.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: I have some figures to hand, and while I am not sure whether they are correct, our guests might comment on them. They relate to injuries and deaths at Shelbourne Park. In 2019, there were 21 injuries and four deaths; in 2018, 41 injuries and 12 deaths; and in 2017, 21 injuries and ten deaths. To me, who does not know a pile about the matter, that seems extraordinarily high. Are the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: I may be mistaken but I do not believe there is the same number of deaths in horse racing, even though there are a large number of meetings and so on. I find the figures worrying.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: My figures suggest that the number is four.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: It was mentioned that the number of deaths is declining but in both 2015 and 2016, there were seven deaths, whereas in 2017, there were ten and in 2018, there were 12. It seems to be increasing rather than declining. While it seems to be going a bit more slowly this year, the year is not yet finished. I do not know much about it but it seems extraordinary that so many dogs have died at...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: Out of 10,000 dogs that started racing, four died.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: What is an acceptable level of deaths?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: It is obviously not being achieved if 100 deaths a year is normal. In regard to Horse Racing Ireland, would it be one or two horses?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: It would be interesting to see the comparative figures.
- Dublin Fingal By-election: Issue of Writ (7 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: I move: That the Ceann Comhairle direct the Clerk of the Dáil to issue his writ for the election of a Member to fill the vacancy which has occurred in the membership of the present Dáil consequent on the election to the European Parliament of Clare Daly, a member for the constituency of Dublin Fingal.
- Dublin Mid-West By-election: Issue of Writ (7 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: I wish to share time with Deputy Joan Collins.
- Dublin Mid-West By-election: Issue of Writ (7 Nov 2019)
Thomas Pringle: As we know, the by-elections in the two constituencies have been caused by the election of Clare Daly and Mick Wallace to the European Parliament. I can say without contradiction that our loss in this House is definitely Europe's gain. Clare Daly was recognised by everyone here as a very capable and resourceful Deputy. Her constituency of Donegal Fingal has certainly missed her. I...
