Éamon Ó Cuív: May I correct the Minister?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Further and Higher Education (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: They were reduced.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Further and Higher Education (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: As well as that, the figure concerning the adjacency rate changed, so all the Minister has done is gone back to where we were.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Further and Higher Education (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: As well as that, the Minister absolutely butchered the postgraduate rates. There has been a dramatic regression since 2008 but the Minister very cleverly glossed over all that. This is despite my having asked a very specific question as to where we were in 2008 and where we are today, even allowing for the miserly increases that were given in the budget for 2022–23. We have gone...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Further and Higher Education (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The great announcement of €200 per annum means a very small increase to the income threshold at a time when, because of inflation, incomes are rising. We are a country mile away from where we were in 2008. The Minister might tell me what was available for postgraduate students in 2008 by comparison with what is available under his fantastic package for 2022–23.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Further and Higher Education (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I am a member of a Government party but I do not have to agree with everything members of the Government do. That is just a fact. It is one of the unfortunate parts of coalition. What were the rates in 2008, and what are the rates now? I believe third level education is incredibly important, as is making it accessible to those on low and medium incomes. The Minister might tell me the...

Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: She was not the only one, because people rang from all over the country. All of us, collectively, serve constituents who are all the people of the State and we owe it to them to provide a good service. My belief is the ordinary plain people of Ireland want us resourced to do the job. I suggest those of us who engage in committees and put much time and effort into them in these Houses...

Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (30 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I am pleased to be able to talk about this important Bill, which covers the entire running of this House. I would like to address two things. The pay scales of the secretarial assistants go from €24,223 to €46,888. There is a difference of something like €16,500 between their pay scale and that of parliamentary assistants at the bottom of the scale. After 18 years,...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Legislative Programme (24 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I would be very interested to hear if there was a meeting with Deputy Fitzmaurice. There was certainly no meeting with me and both of us had a big interest in this Bill. I am still totally baffled. The Government was formed at the end of June 2020. It is now nearly December 2021. It has had a year and five months to resolve the issue. In my little simple mind, there seem to be two quick...
