- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I accept that the building is more efficient but I want to know, in writing, what the 446.7 kW cost and what the remedies to reduce the bill cost. What was the cost of the measures that the SEAI took to ensure that by this time next year we will see a vast reduction in the cost of the energy for the SEAI building? When it comes to overall efficiency, is Mr. Meally happy with how...
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I am talking about buildings specifically; I am not talking about cars or fleets.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: Mr. Meally said earlier that there are significant challenges going forward. Are our targets low? We met them in 2020 but were they revised at any stage?
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: No, were the targets that we met revised downwards so that we would meet them?
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: Going forward it will be a challenge to meet them. Is that correct?
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: We could take the view that if it is a challenge for the SEAI, it is an even more of a challenge for the constituent or private citizen to meet the requirements.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: The Departments might find that the changes are affordable but the individual is under more pressure. We have to be careful about how much pressure we put on people, particularly when we tell them to reduce their heating usage. Many of the constituents we are talking about have colder blood levels because they are older. They are in their seventies and eighties, are sitting at home and...
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I am a bit concerned. I had to step out earlier on and I apologise for that; it would not be normal for me to do that. I am concerned and for the benefit of the committee I need to ask if the Department can provide an explanation of the late filing of accounts and why the errors were not picked up?
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: When Mr. Quinlan says the Department is reviewing its processes, what is in place so that it will not happen again or how did it happen? I know he is saying that it happened and that it was just missed but why was that? What went wrong?
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: Mr. Quinlan and everyone on the Committee of Public Accounts appreciates that this is an unacceptable amount to go astray or not get appropriate oversight. This week the committee issued a report on the HSE and the purchasing of ventilators. The report states that €30 million of the Exchequer's money went awry. We just cannot have that and that is why I ask that there would be...
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I accept that no money was lost. My point is that it undermines public confidence when there is an oversight that does not work. We are not hearing what the new oversight is that will prevent it from happening but I am asking that everybody take it seriously from the point of view of the public's confidence and how we deal with public money.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I know that but the Department accepts that there was an error. It was not picked up.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: That is my point. I accept that the Department accepts there was an error but it is about how it happened, how it was corrected and how we will prevent it in the future.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: Basically, the applicant pays for the assessment. That assessment is then forwarded to the one-stop shop.
- Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Financial Statements of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland: Discussion (9 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I wish to state that there was 53% of an increase. It does not matter how much money is involved, if a cost is calculated at 53% then it is outlandish. Is that not correct?

- International Women's Day: Statements (8 Mar 2023)
Verona Murphy: I am delighted to be in this Chamber for a third International Women's Day. It is a huge privilege to be in a position to speak for women. This morning I began my day by visiting Wygram Nursing Home in Wexford. There were probably 30 women there aged from 75 to the great old age of 98 who were delighted to see me and I was delighted to see them. All too often on International Women's Day,...
