- Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage (7 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Minister of State was right when he said this Bill has been around since 2016 so it is important we get it right. Fianna Fáil supports the passage of this Bill through Committee Stage but we will be putting forward amendments. The primary purpose of the Bill is to implement a core recommendation of the Mahon tribunal, which was the establishment of the independent office of...

- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Like previous speakers, I agree on the Versatis patch, which is no longer available under the medical card and drug refund schemes. Some 25,000 people are using the patch. Owing to the cost, it is no longer available under the medical card and drug refund schemes. A lady I know went into a pharmacy to buy a packet of the patches because they were no longer available on the medical card and...

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Why are we in Ireland charging so much for these patches when one can go across to Spain-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: -----and purchase them for €120? We need to examine this. The Minister needs to come into the House to address this. I want to raise another serious issue. Recently there was an inquest into the death of a young boy.The jury recommended the introduction of regulation and safety considerations for the use of sulky cars on public roads. I also read of an incident where a pregnant...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Why is one regulated but the other is not? Unregulated sulky racing is dangerous and has already led to loss of life. It is a traditional sport which should have a traditional home and be banned from our highways and byways. There is no appetite for sulky racing on public roads. Accordingly, it needs to be regulated. I received hundreds of calls over the past several weeks on this issue....
- Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I welcome the Taoiseach to the House. I wish to take this opportunity to bring some very important issues to his attention. It is time for a change, but it is radical change that will make a difference to all our people. It is time for us to accept that the recovery that is taking place has broken down on the M50. The people of Ireland beyond the M50 have yet to experience any recovery....
- Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: One more page and I am finished.
- Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I have a lot more to talk about. However, all I can ask is the Taoiseach not forget rural Ireland. There is life past the M50. We in rural Ireland are forgotten. I will be looking for massive changes. Broadband is a major issue that came up yesterday. I will come back to the Taoiseach on this. Hopefully, I might be able to get back in.
- Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Government is not looking after rural Ireland. Senator Buttimer is totally wrong.
- Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I am glad the Taoiseach clarified that.
- Seanad: Emergency Department Waiting Times: Statements (31 Jan 2018)
Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I can only speak for my area of Carlow-Kilkenny. This year, the number of patients on trolleys in Kilkenny hospital was up. The staff are worn out. They are excellent and do a great job. Over Christmas, there was one particular unit where there were 44 beds but 52 people being cared for. They were on couches. That is how bad it was. We need to look at this because it is getting worse....
- Seanad: Emergency Department Waiting Times: Statements (31 Jan 2018)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I thank the Minister of State for addressing the House today. Changes are being made albeit they are very slow to come. Over seven years in government, the Minister of State and his colleagues have built 5,000 social housing units. The most recent figures show there are nearly 9,000 homeless people in Ireland. Nationally, there are approximately 5,500 adults and 3,500 homeless children....

I welcome the Bill as it will allow the process to progress. Carlow needs...

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Absolutely. We are very proud of it. There is so much employment there and so many students have done very well out of it. More than 100 master's, honours and ordinary degrees and higher certificate courses are available at the Institute of Technology, Carlow. As well as traditional degree courses, it also offers niche courses. Many of them are the first of their kind in Ireland. For...
