- Seanad: Alcohol Abuse. (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I am delighted with the response and the fact that there will be more co-operation. I forgot to commend all those involved in the decision to bring alcohol under the substance misuse strategy, which will replace the national drugs strategy. It will play a part in dealing with the people and the families who suffer the consequences of alcohol abuse. It will have major implications in our...
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I note this is the date on which Deputy Bertie Ahern announced he was retiring as Taoiseach last year and it is the 13th anniversary of the election to Leinster House of the Minister, Deputy Brian Lenihan, and myself. I use this opportunity to make the point.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: Last week, I visited Spain to attend the youth advisory forum at the Council of Europe directorate on youth and sport. One of the key issues raised at the meeting concerned the mosquito device and I ask the Deputy Leader to ensure we have a debate regarding this device as soon as possible. I know this caused great mirth the last time I raised the matter not only among Senators but also on...
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I ask that we have a debate on this issue as soon as possible. It is a human rights issue regarding our young people. If we do not regulate or prohibit this device, it will potentially be used on other people. When it affects people over 20, we will probably take it more seriously. On another issue, following my questioning yesterday of the fact that people who had been involved in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: ââendorses the debate we had yesterday on the tobacco industry. It is very important this is addressed. I add my voice to that of Senator Donohoe on Northern Ireland. There was another shooting in Creggan last night. I would call Creggan "Derry", but the national ordnance survey map of 2008 calls it Londonderry or Doire. I ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local...
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I ask that the national survey offices would have the "Derry air" as well as the "Londonderry air". It is the place where I was born.
- Seanad: Economic and Recovery Authority: Motion (1 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: That is true. The Senator can refer to documents but cannot display them.
- Seanad: Economic and Recovery Authority: Motion (1 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: Agreed.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I acknowledge that there have been a number of announcements this week by Government that fall squarely behind decisions taken on reports by previous Oireachtas committees, which vindicates the work of those committees. One such decision is bringing alcohol under the substance misuse strategy which will take over the national drugs strategy for 2009 to 2016. While I was Chair of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Apr 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I understand that. However, someone at some stage must stand back. We watched a programme last week which highlighted that cigarettes are being illegally imported into this country but a 13 cent fine was given for a major breach of the law. To have illegal cigarettes coming into the country and for an offender to get a 13 cent fine is wrong. Regardless of whether it is the role of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: It was sweet of people yesterday to suggest that the answer to the question of the mosquito device was to belittle or support Barry Manilow's music.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: Will the Leader arrange for a discussion on food safety and healthy food options? In these economically challenging times, people state on radio that they will choose the cheaper option, be it in terms of cuts of meat or snacks. I would appreciate an opportunity to debate the matter of obesity, which has economic and health costs. We should not only discuss how to get cheap food, but also...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: It is time that the matter is exposed as an aspect of life and one that can be dealt with by a variety of options. A discussion on the subject would be useful.
- Seanad: Taxi Regulation (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I thank the Cathaoirleach for allowing me to raise this issue. It concerns the need for the Minister for Transport to review the ability of rural hackney men to convert to taxi licences where infrastructure is absent and they compete with illegal operators. It is obviously a gripping subject for the Members leaving the Chamber. I appreciate the attendance of the Minister of State who has a...
- Seanad: Taxi Regulation (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I thank the Minister of State for his response. I understand I will probably find the answers within the commission's review. The Minister of State should not take too lightly the situation in Border areas. It is undermining people's ability to earn money. Therefore, it is undermining their ability to spend â¬6,300 to buy the licence in the first place, as well the meter on top of that.
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: I do not want to cut off the Deputy on that topic but she has gone over her time.
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: That is agreed.

Cecilia Keaveney: The Senator has run out of time.
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (11 Mar 2009)
Cecilia Keaveney: The Senator is on a very long two minutes at this stage.
