- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: National Broadband Plan (2 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am asking for an update on the national broadband plan, including design, build, premises passed and connections made, and the particular works that need to be done to catch up on the dreadful Covid delays, and delivering on the accelerated roll-out we have spoken about many times before. We all know that this plan has been dogged by many issues. People really require delivery on Internet...

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 128. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment his plans to deal with issues with communal heating systems such as Carlinn Hall, Dundalk. [28527/22]
- Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I add my voice to what many of my colleagues have spoken about and we are glad that we are getting to grips with an issue we have failed miserably with in this State over many years. However, I cannot help but think that this Bill is somewhat too rushed. We have heard Members say already that questions remain on its workability and on whether it is failing. That is on either side of the...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We have now had sight of the four-point plan by the Dublin Airport Authority, DAA, to ensure we do not again see the absolutely scandalous sights that took place in Dublin Airport over the weekend. Upwards of 1,400 people may have missed flights and it was an utterly desperate situation for them. We hope the plan will offer some element of security that we will not have these problems...
- Adaption Grants for Older People and People with a Disability: Motion [Private Members] (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We have all been inundated in our constituency offices by people looking for adaptation grants and those on the waiting lists. I spoke to the council this week. Generally there has been a two-year backlog. It has probably reduced to a year and a half. In fairness the absolute majority of people on the lists are top priority and this is the reality. We all know we are dealing with...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Obviously, we would all prefer to be dealing with a different set of circumstances. I apologise if I go over ground that members have already covered. I was trying to run two events while watching this on my phone, but it is what it is. We do not need me to repeat how this was a disaster and chaos and that no one wants to see it happen again. It was even a disaster for the State from an...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I get that. Someone believed they were going to be rostered. The issue has never arisen before, DAA has caught it and it will not happen again.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: How many staff did DAA have on overall? That 20 was out of how many?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Those 17 were, for want of a better phrase, DAA's own fault or a process mistake, and 20 others did not show up. Would that be usual?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that completely.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: It was 20.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We all accept that, considering the pressure they are under. Anybody who has been through an airport in the last while can attest to that. We had a particular situation that we need to avoid. Mr. Philips is talking about this four-point plan. I was led to believe, and the Chair was probably coming from the same place, that there is a ramp-up facility if needed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We have had this conversation about 2024 and 2025. We have all heard anecdotal information that people said they wanted to fly the minute they could. None of that matters.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Either way, it is the other one. We are where we are. DAA has looked at Cork Airport from a point of view of human resources. Where else has it looked? If it is completely under pressure and stretched, has it had a conversation with the Government about the possibility of bringing people in? Are there any suitable people within State services? There is much talk of bringing in the Army....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Is there anyone who can give DAA anything it needs?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Or anybody who can fill that position.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is it. There is no short-term fix.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. A number of people have already stated that we are paying for the sins of the past because of the 1,000 people who were let go. Mr. Philips will make whatever arguments he will in that regard but that is what it is at this point in time. This plan is basically putting everybody DAA possibly can in play for the next period and ensuring training will happen for those who need...
