Gerry Horkan: What about on the buses as opposed to directed at the buses? Is the number small?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is important that we articulate that point. The prospect of antisocial behaviour puts people off taking the bus or stops them from re-engaging with it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Will it take into account the €2, the €2.30 and other discounts, the fare cap per day and per week, and so on?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Is that four or five years away?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Would that save Dublin Bus significant costs in terms of security and other costs related to handling cash?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is going that way naturally anyway.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Mr. Coyne. I also acknowledge the large amount of work being done by the Dublin Commuter Coalition.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I accept that. I am conscious of it. I have been here since 1.30 p.m. I was actually here at 1 p.m. for the private meeting. The topic is particularly relevant for me. I thank the Dublin Commuter Coalition. I could engage with it for 20 minutes and maybe I will do that but not here. I just want to make a couple of points. I would love to come back on where DRT is going. There is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the Chair. I wish I had more time. Hopefully it is a topic that we can come back to again for those of us who are very invested in the Dublin strategy daily. All day and every day.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Like the Cathaoirleach and Senator Chambers, I welcome the Dutch ambassador on King's Day. From his script about the relationship, the Cathaoirleach may or may not be aware that the chain of the Lord Mayor of Dublin has on its crest "King William of Orange", which was a surprise to many people. It has been there for a very long time.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is another link between us and the Netherlands. I pay tribute to both Jimmy Leonard and Michael O'Kennedy, who passed away during the recess. I was at the funeral of Michael O'Kennedy in Nenagh last week. I did not know Jimmy Leonard well, but he served in the Chamber for a long time. Michael O'Kennedy had a distinguished career as a Minister, Senator, Deputy and a European...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I also mentioned the delays in processing passports, work permits and visas.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Deputy O'Rourke. I thank Ms Brogan for attending with her team today. In a way, this meeting arises from the meeting we had with Transport Infrastructure Ireland about the problem it is encountering with the public works contracts. I can understand Ms Brogan's position but it is regrettable that we do not have officials here from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I will tease out a few other questions with Ms Brogan because she is not in a position to deal with the public works contract in its essence and the problems the construction industry and, indeed, TII are encountering with the nature of it as it is currently formatted. Some of my questions relate to the jobs that are being put out to tender. We heard from the TII already, but the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: However, that excludes aviation and other areas. I am wondering what bang for our buck the State will get, relative to what we thought we were going to get, based on all this price inflation. I know there are commercial sensitivities, but I am talking about the global picture. If prices have gone up by 20% or 30%, are we saying with regard to a certain amount of projects we thought we were...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I am sorry to cut across, but I presume they will come back to the Department if they were going to build a road for €6 million and the price is now coming in at €11 million.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: The Department hears this at some point, sooner or later, and then decides whether it is going to allocate €11 million or it is not worth it at that price.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I do not wish to pick on a particular operator, but there have been companies that have not been able to continue in existence. It may not be totally related to this, but this must have played a part.
