Early Childhood Care and Education: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (5 Jul 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: I welcome everyone in the Visitors Gallery for this very important debate. I commend my colleague, Deputy Kathleen Funchion, for bringing forward the motion. It is important to recognise the great work child care providers do in highlighting and fixing the problems facing the sector, in which wage levels are a serious problem. They do not match the qualifications and experience of those...

Waste Disposal: Motion [Private Members] (4 Jul 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: This move by the Government highlights how out of touch it is. As usual, Fianna Fáil is waiting in the wings to support its partners in government no matter what. Fianna Fáil's motion does not block these new charges, but simply lets the Government off the hook. It amazes me that the Government has no hesitation in introducing measures that will result in increased bills for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Atypical Work Permit Scheme: Discussion (4 Jul 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. Ms McGinley appeared before the committee last May and made a presentation on open-ended hours, during which she alluded to this issue. I am delighted she is here. I have been a member of the committee for a year and Mr. Fleming's presentation was the most powerful I have heard so far. He got the message across clearly. I was aware of the...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Departmental Budgets (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: Yes. I tabled a question on this issue to the Minister, but it was referred to the Department of Social Protection. It concerned the blackspots highlighted by the CSO, 17 of which are in my constituency of Limerick, with eight of the top ten in Limerick city. If creating jobs in Moyross, Southill and St. Mary's Park is the responsibility of the Department of Social Protection rather than...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Brexit Issues (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: I thank the Minister for taking an interest in this issue. I also want to mention the recent admission of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Coveney, that special status for the North is needed. However, we must ensure the agencies discussed today are ready to assist in all possible circumstances, including no deal being reached and World Trade Organization, WTO, tariffs...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Departmental Programmes (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: I agree with the comments of Deputy Niall Collins about IDA Ireland, whose conduct in this debacle has been disgraceful, as has the way it has treated Connect Ireland and the Succeed in Ireland project. There is no legal dispute, despite what IDA Ireland states. IDA Ireland failed to come before the jobs committee when we requested it to come, citing a legal case which I do not believe...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Departmental Programmes (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: Can the submissions that have been made be published? They should be published if they can be. I appreciate that a review is ongoing but how long will it take? This project was shut down in March and there is no legal impediment to the Department providing a bridging contract until a new tender is won. I have concerns about how the review was conducted from the start. I sent a...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Brexit Issues (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: 2. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the way in which she plans to address the level of unpreparedness of businesses for Brexit (details supplied). [30623/17]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Brexit Issues (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: The question is about Brexit and the unpreparedness that exists not just in Government, but in businesses across the State. A quarterly survey of InterTradeIreland showed that 97% of businesses have no plan in place to deal with Brexit, while a later survey showed that 98% had no plan, so the level of preparedness had gone down.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Brexit Issues (29 Jun 2017)

Maurice Quinlivan: The first survey showed that 97% of businesses were not prepared and the next showed 98%, when one would have expected it to go in the other direction. The level of unpreparedness is unacceptable one year on from the Brexit vote. The fact that the level has deteriorated should concern us a lot. InterTradeIreland's staff levels have dropped consistently over the past six years and it has...
