Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State and congratulate him on introducing this important legislation. I thank Senator Coghlan for his wholehearted support for it. He referred to the extra pressures placed on small businesses by new legislation generally but, based on my experience, the pressure of meeting accountancy and legal charges create greater pressure.

Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)

Mary White: Utilising an outside accountant represents a significant cost to a small business. The cost of insurance is the sexy issue, which is always highlighted by the media, but legal costs are also extraordinary. The legislation is important because it reaffirms and strengthens the Government's commitment to making Ireland one of the most attractive and competitive locations for international...

Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)

Mary White: He was supported by his Minister for Finance, Ray MacSharry, and my husband, Pádraig White, who, at the time, was chief executive of the IDA, which had to market the IFSC around the world. I agree wholeheartedly with the Minister of State that there is a multitude of reasons why leading global financial institutions have been attracted to Ireland but the most notable are the attractiveness...

Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)

Mary White: We need that approach regarding the second terminal at Dublin Airport.

Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)

Mary White: It is urgent that the Minister for Transport, Deputy Cullen, come before the House. I regret that the provision of the second terminal at Dublin Airport has become a political football. The airport is most inefficient and incompetent. There is constant congestion and that is part of the security problem. The state of Dublin Airport and its lack of facilities are an embarrassment internationally.

Mary White: I just want to let everybody know.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Mary White: I wish to support what Senator Mansergh said about revisiting the CE schemes, with regard to child care in particular. As a result of my meetings with public and private crèche representatives, I know they have a problem due to the lack of guarantees regarding CE schemes. They had been using people on such schemes which were very helpful in getting people started on a career in child care. I...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Mary White: Members of the Oireachtas dropped the ball with regard to CE schemes. I would like the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children to attend the House to discuss what is happening in accident and emergency units.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Mary White: Three weeks ago, a friend of mine was admitted to an accident and emergency unit following a fall in a hospital. I will not name the hospital or my friend. Her injured arm was put in a sling and she was sent home. She had asked for Anadin for the pain but the doctor said she did not need it. She returned three weeks later as requested, last Friday, and underwent an emergency operation for...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Mary White: The doctors cannot cope with the pressure of serious cases attending accident and emergency units.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Mary White: I support Senator Terry in what she said about the murder which took place in her constituency. This morning I heard of another murder. I am waiting for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell, to comment. He is an opinionated Minister with an opinion on everything.
