- Local Government (Charges) Bill 2009 [Seanad]: Committee and Remaining Stages (9 Jul 2009)
Jimmy Deenihan: I was just wondering if there is an overall figure in respect of the number of houses listed. I presume castles in which people live, etc., are included.
- Local Government (Charges) Bill 2009 [Seanad]: Committee and Remaining Stages (9 Jul 2009)
Jimmy Deenihan: I presume some of them are very famous houses which attracted attention when the scheme was introduced some years ago. It will be stated that those who rent out their properties as self-catering holiday homes will be penalised, while some very wealthy individuals will be exempt. However, that is the way it is dealt with in the legislation.

- Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty of Lisbon) Bill 2009: Second Stage (8 Jul 2009)
Jimmy Deenihan: We cannot lose this referendum. That would do irreparable damage to our country. The first referendum damaged our status in Europe, putting a question mark over our commitment to Europe and people who are actively involved at Commission level say that the Irish are not being treated as well as they were in the past. As one politician said, the Irish simply did not stand their round in the...

- Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages (7 Jul 2009)
Jimmy Deenihan: Unfortunately, I was not in a position to make a contribution to the Second Stage debate on the Bill. I have an interest in Fenit Harbour, which is located in my constituency. I am glad the Minister, more or less, reversed his original intention in respect of amalgamating it with Foynes Harbour. The latter would not be appropriate and it would be better if Fenit Harbour Commissioners were...
- Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages (7 Jul 2009)
Jimmy Deenihan: A number of Bills have been enacted containing a stipulation that at least 40% of the composition of a board would be female. I am on a committee that is examining the role of women in politics at present, of which Senator Ivana Bacik is rapporteur. I note that whereas Government policy is that it should be 40%, it is not enshrined in the legislation. I believe the Minister included such a...
