Other Questions: IDA Ireland Site Visits (23 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: I want to raise the question of the number of IDA site visits to County Meath. I have not specified a year in the question, but I am sure the Minister can give me information. I also want to ask about the level of investment and grant aid in County Meath.

Other Questions: IDA Ireland Site Visits (23 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: I also welcome the investment by Shire, Facebook and other companies in the Clonee and Dunboyne regions. It is very important and is certainly a vote of confidence in that area. What I am concerned about is that while the Minister of State mentioned the Kells Tech Hub, and I welcome the investment that has gone into that, there was no IDA financial investment in Meath in 2016. It was one...

Other Questions: IDA Ireland Site Visits (23 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: I accept what the Minister of State is saying about the indigenous sector being important, but the question was about FDI and the role of the IDA in funding that. It is a fact that there was no funding invested by Government through the IDA in Meath last year. It is also a fact that there is a business park which is owned by the IDA outside Drogheda, in County Meath which is almost empty,...

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (22 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: This goes to the heart of the problem many people had with the Bill. I thank the Minister of State and her officials for working on it in the past couple of years in terms of the merged institute and the gap that was there. That is why we are deleting all of these sections, which is welcome.

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (22 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: I wish to again raise an issue about the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I will table an amendment on Report Stage to seek to insert a new section in Part 6 of the Bill. I wish to make the case now which I believe I must do before I raise the issue on Report Stage.

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (22 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: The issue dates back to the Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 whereby the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, RCSI, was allowed to describe itself as a university of medicine and health sciences as a subtitle. As the designation can only used outside the State, the college has encountered difficulties which the Technological Universities Bill offers us a convenient opportunity...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Curriculum Reform: Discussion (21 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: An incredible range of views has been put forward by the various witnesses appearing here from a wide range of sectors and it is very helpful to the work we do. I may not go into everybody's individual contribution, but there are a number of common threads. One is that we must emphasise skills-based rather than knowledge-based learning. Do the witnesses have views on the fact that the...

Thomas Byrne: Even with regard to curriculum development?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Curriculum Reform: Discussion (21 Nov 2017)

Thomas Byrne: Okay. I accept the Chairman's ruling but I would certainly like to discuss that at some future stage because serious issues have been raised around curriculum development. I will leave my questions there. They were general enough but this is the start of our process on this and the statements were really helpful.
