Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: It would be worth the Minister's while to examine why these six hospitals are being built. Over the last 20 years in this country no more that seven such hospitals have been constructed. Why have 36 submissions been made for these hospitals?

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: The Minister should know what my policies are; he need not ask me about them tonight. To ensure the proper delivery of a radiotherapy service in the south east, that radiotherapy unit should have been built on the grounds of Waterford Regional Hospital where the other oncology and surgical services are available——

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: ——and where there is a multidisciplinary service.

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: Does the Minister disagree with the multidisciplinary delivery of health services? The Minister is the one who should listen. He is poorly informed. He is driven by a silly agenda and is not prepared to move sideways from it. The best place for that radiotherapy unit would have been on the grounds of Waterford Regional Hospital.

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: Will the Leas-Cheann Comhairle ask the Minister to stay quiet for a while because we were talking about——

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: Before I do so I would like to say that the Minister is totally lost in regard to what is going on here. Patient care is being seriously compromised by some of the Government's polices. The Minister is ignorant of what I am talking about and he cannot even listen. I was talking about a private hospital and not about radiotherapy. He is totally confused.

Public Expenditure: Motion. (3 Oct 2006)

Liam Twomey: The Minister needs to see a good physician because I believe he is suffering from a fair amount of confusion and is delusional. Perhaps I could do something for him afterwards but I will move the adjournment of the debate first.

Nursing Homes: Motion (Resumed). (28 Sep 2006)

Liam Twomey: No matter what is said in this House, the Government has utterly failed in every respect. It has failed in its duty to legislate, it has failed in its duty to give political direction to the health services and it has persistently failed elderly patients in nursing homes. Government representatives come into this Chamber and bleat about what they have done and what they will do, which is a...

Nursing Homes: Motion (Resumed). (28 Sep 2006)

Liam Twomey: He is not worried about the patients, nor what sort of system must be brought into place, but only worried about how he is perceived. One sentence in his letter to The Irish Times was quite interesting, "Your readers can be assured that the HSE will not tolerate nursing homes operating below acceptable standards". I would like to know where Mr. Browne has been for the last nine or ten...

Liam Twomey: I move: That Dáil Éireann, concerned at: the failure of the Government to publish Professor O'Neill's report into deaths at Leas Cross nursing home; the failure of the Government to fulfil promises made in this House by the Taoiseach and the Minister for Health and Children to introduce legislation to provide for an independent statutorily-based inspection regime for all nursing homes; and...

Nursing Homes: Motion. (27 Sep 2006)

Liam Twomey: In June 2005, the first report on Leas Cross, namely, the Hynes report was published. It also exposed many matters which are still under discussion tonight. What has been done since its publication? Nothing appears to stir either the Minister of State or his colleagues into action in respect of care of the elderly. The Minister for Health and Children, who prides herself on being a can-do...

Nursing Homes: Motion. (27 Sep 2006)

Liam Twomey: I am simply reading from the Official Report. I will move on to 2006, by which time the Government had promised that everything would be different. However, 2006 did not start well due to the publication of the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital report and the recommendations by Judge Harding Clark to make improvements in the health service a priority.
