Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá fáilte roimh na finnéithe. Léigh mé an ráiteas ach ní raibh mé anseo don phíosa tosaigh den chruinniú so má deirim rud ar bith a bhí clúdaithe cheana féin, abair liom é. Tá cuid mhaith den fhírinne sa mhéid a dúirt an Teachta Mairéad Farrell. Tá líon uafásach íseal...

- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Beidh mé an-sciobtha. Luaigh an tUasal Phelan ina freagra nár aontaigh sí go mbeadh iallach ann. Cheana féin, cuireadh an cheist an raibh gá le reachtaíocht. Is é an chéad rud a gcaithfimid a phlé ná go bhfuil reachtaíocht ann a thugann stádas Gaeltachta do 40% den chathair. Táim ag cur ceistenna faoi dhá rud....
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Will Ms Phelan explain to me, as someone who represents Galway, if that was analysed in the Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht in the small area statistics? If that analysis has been done, it will show either that there is no difference, or that there are differences and therefore there are different policies in different areas. Will she make that available to the committee? I am not just talking...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Galway County Council has. It has very different policies in Árainn, An Spidéal and other places compared with the way it operates the policy in Bushypark and Barna.
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: In Barna, for example, it would not have been that way traditionally. In very recent times, there were people from the village of Barna who were native Irish speakers.
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: From what Ms Phelan has said, even though there is a legal obligation in relation to Irish within the designated Gaeltacht areas under the 1956 Act and all the Acts up to 2010, no special consideration was given - as it would have been in the county - for the part of the city that is designated a Gaeltacht. If the conclusion was that there is no difference there, perhaps the council should...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Sorry to interrupt, but the Gaeltacht legislation of designation was totally on linguistic grounds. If one were to include music, hurling and any other cultural feature, on a hurling basis Kilkenny is probably the strongest Gaeltacht in the country.
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: There are now parts of Dublin, for example where Cuala GAA is in south Dublin, that have high percentages of Irish speakers because of all-Irish schools. It is not what the Gaeltacht legislation is about. The planning legislation in regard to the Gaeltacht flows from the Gaeltacht legislation of 1926, 1956 and 2010. It is purely linguistic. It has nothing to do with music, hurling,...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Tithíocht agus Cúrsaí Pleanála Fisiciúla sa Ghaeltacht: Plé (Atógáil) (19 Jan 2022)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá an Cathaoirleach tar éis teacht ar chnámh na huillinne anois leis an gceist seo. Feictear dom le fada an lá go bhfuil dearcadh ag daoine maidir le reachtaíocht Ghaeltachta agus reachtaíocht teanga ina gcoiteann nach gcaitear cloí léi i ndáiríre agus go bhfuil sí ann mar ornáidíocht ach ní mar dhlí, ach is dlí...
