- Topical Issue Debate: Death of Ms Savita Halappanavar (14 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: Like the Taoiseach, the Minister's response to the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar is utterly inadequate. There is prima facie evidence which makes a powerful case that her life could have been saved with the termination of her unviable pregnancy. The Minister had a prepared script but now I ask him to answer the questions that are being put. Are there hospitals in this State whose...
- Topical Issue Debate: Death of Ms Savita Halappanavar (14 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: The tragic death of Ms Savita Halappanavar at Galway University Hospital followed the denial of a medical termination of an unviable pregnancy. According to her husband, when Ms Halappanavar requested a termination she was refused and allegedly told, "This is a Catholic country." Medical commentary today suggests a termination in Ireland under these circumstances would normally happen....

- Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed): IFSC Clearing House Group (13 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: Does the Taoiseach not find it extraordinary that what is essentially an arm of the Government is an institutionalised conduit for the world's financiers and financial speculators to have a decisive influence on Government policy in respect of crucial issues - the taxing of super wealth, financial speculation, etc. - which could have an effect on their profits? Whereas lobbying is part of...

Joe Higgins: -----one of which is dedicated to dealing with the participation of hedge funds - including vulture capitalists - which have wreaked enormous damage internationally as a result of their speculation and related activities. - Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed): Public Sector Allowances (13 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: The capitalist press, notably the sections owned by tax avoiding billionaire exiles, regularly uses the anachronistic nature of many allowances to ridicule, undermine and treat with contempt public sector workers in general. It tries to create the impression that all such workers are living as if they own goldmines. If the interests of the public sector in the Department of the Taoiseach...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Pre-Budget Submissions: Discussion with Civic Society Representatives and Focus Groups (8 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: At one stage TASC was considered to be a radical think tank alternative, but I must say Mr. McDonnell's contribution was hugely disappointing. In reality it bought in completely to the bailouts and the austerity agenda when what we need are radical alternatives. With regard to the property tax, I believe Mr. McDonnell stated every house valued between €150,000 and €300,000...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Pre-Budget Submissions: Discussion with Civic Society Representatives and Focus Groups (8 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: Is it correct?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Pre-Budget Submissions: Discussion with Civic Society Representatives and Focus Groups (8 Nov 2012)
Joe Higgins: Where on earth does Mr. McDonnell think hard-pressed working people on modest incomes will find this extra money? I presume he is also in favour of a water tax, which will increase this amount to €1,000 or €1,300. From where is this sacred text about property tax and broadening the tax base coming? It is as if every household has a hidden pot of gold it can pull from under...
