Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (18 May 2005)

John Perry: I have no doubt that when the vote is taken for Taoiseach, he will endorse the Mayo man for that job. One can see the huge imbalance between east and west. I fully agree that there is a lack of development on the west coast compared to the east coast, and a lack of investment in Knock Airport, with its potential as an international airport. Given the potential of low-fare airlines, I will be...

Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (18 May 2005)

John Perry: The capacity is there on the west coast. Deputy Cowley's point is valid. Dublin's capacity does not compare with that of the west, so why not have low airfare flights to the west, allowing people to travel from the west if they wish to go to Dublin or to go south. That would allow a real choice and a spread of wealth. When Deputy Kenny is appointed as next Taoiseach, I am certain that the...

Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (18 May 2005)

John Perry: I am disappointed that Michael O'Leary would not look at the development of his airline business on the west coast. This is a very small country and people would travel from Knock all over the country. This would enhance the development of the western region. Regarding the West on Track movement, I hope the report due from Pat McCann will ensure that we will not get a piecemeal approach. I...

Public Expenditure: Motion. (17 May 2005)

John Perry: I am delighted to speak on this important motion. The Government talks about value for money but it does not have a notion of what value for money means. This country owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Comptroller and Auditor General, Mr. Purcell. The Minister, Deputy Cowen, spoke about increased spending but the Government is taking €27 billion more out of the economy than it did in...

Public Expenditure: Motion. (17 May 2005)

John Perry: This is not a victimless situation. We are discussing how taxpayers' money is spent. People are left on hospital trolleys and there are unfinished schools. When the Government spends €1 million or €1 billion, somebody is suffering. The former Minister for Health and Children has cost the State €500 million since 2001, when he was told about the situation by senior civil servants. The...

Public Expenditure: Motion. (17 May 2005)

John Perry: What about electronic voting? Machines worth €55 million are being stored at the Minister's instigation. I hope he has not forgotten them.

Public Expenditure: Motion. (17 May 2005)

John Perry: I am not swallowing the Minister's comments. He commissioned the electronic voting project that cost €55 million. Where are the machines? On the Government's track record on managing the economy, it fails on all counts. The Government should not mention the words "value for money" because it has no notion what it is about.
