- Seanad: Tributes to Deputy Head Usher of the Houses of the Oireachtas. (10 Dec 2004)
Mary O'Rourke: We all know Frank Lane. He is one of the very familiar faces in the House. From the first time that a new Member enters the House he or she quickly comes to recognise him as "the envelope man". I do not know how ambiguous that may sound but he gave Members their monthly envelopes.
- Seanad: Tributes to Deputy Head Usher of the Houses of the Oireachtas. (10 Dec 2004)
Mary O'Rourke: Of course the envelopes were always white, like Frank Lane himself. He joined the staff of the Oireachtas in 1960 when he was a packer and porter in the stationery office. In 1973 he became an usher in the Houses of the Oireachtas. He was promoted to senior usher and in June 2003 he became deputy head usher. As may be seen he worked his way right through the system. Frank is the very face and...

- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Dec 2004)
Mary O'Rourke: Senator Finucane raised the issue of Northern Ireland and the need for a debate. We have put that proposal forward and it is now a matter of the availability of the Taoiseach or the Minister for Foreign Affairs and of time. If we can reach agreement on it we will see if we have time for it. There is an excellent two page supplement in The Irish Times today which goes through every point of...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Dec 2004)
Mary O'Rourke: No matter what, he is very faithful to Kerry. Senator à Murchú feels we should harmonise Christian principles with political activity. He praised the great relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom. This improved relationship is a welcome step. I regard what happened yesterday as a staging post and not the end. Much has been achieved and we have greater knowledge of what has been...

At that time, as Senator Ryan said, the Minister said he would consider the recommital of part of the Bill, which he did. That, in itself, was very helpful. The approach of the Minister was to find consensus in the...
