Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 to 10, inclusive, together. I last visited Belfast on Monday, 13 June, when I addressed a conference on "Working Together for Peace and Prosperity", organised by the University of Ulster. I took the opportunity in my remarks to outline the Irish Government’s position regarding the imminent UK referendum on European Union membership. I outlined...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: We have a genuine interest in the development and stimulation of both economies, and that is why I am glad the Sinn Féin Party supports the opportunity for people to vote to stay as a member of the European Union. Deputy Adams is aware there is €3 billion on the table for peace and reconciliation and cross-Border activities for communities, etc. No date has yet been fixed for the...

Ceisteanna - Questions: UK Referendum on EU Membership (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: Deputies Niall Collins, Martin, Adams and Boyd Barrett raised a number of important questions. In response to Deputy Collins, there is a €60 billion trade across the Irish Sea every year and, obviously, as the Deputy pointed out, 400,000 jobs at stake here - 200,000 on this side and 200,000 in Britain. These are matters of great concern to Irish exporters, many of whom export...

Ceisteanna - Questions: UK Referendum on EU Membership (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: In that sense, the focus of Europe was on how one deals with this when they are coming from the other side. There is a search and rescue mission led by NATO, of which Ireland is not part, off the Turkish coast in four different segments and people smugglers have been picked up to some extent in that quarter.

Ceisteanna - Questions: UK Referendum on EU Membership (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I will consult the leaders of the Opposition parties as this develops through Thursday night late-Friday morning and we can keep Members informed.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I looked at this. I do not mind but the question in respect of the visit to Belfast is slightly different from the other four questions.

Ceisteanna - Questions (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: Was the question transferred from the Department of the Taoiseach? How did the transfer out occur?

Ceisteanna - Questions (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I will have that looked at.

Ceisteanna - Questions: UK Referendum on EU Membership (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 to 5, inclusive, together. The UK's decision on EU membership later this week is solely a matter for UK voters. However, those voters include Irish citizens living in Great Britain, voters in Northern Ireland and UK citizens living here. As the UK's closest neighbour, Ireland has a unique perspective and interest in the outcome of the referendum. The...

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: I can see that Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has his eyes on the extra moneys that are thankfully becoming available through an expanding economy. There are approximately 600 miles of drainage to be done in Kerry, so a large amount of machinery will be required to keep that going and keep the water flowing.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: These were two very good schemes. I recall being on the county council many years ago when great work was done. I will ask the Minister to communicate to the Deputy when it is expected to move on this. The Údarás roads are part of the responsibility of an tAire, Deputy Kyne, ó Chonamara. I recall the former Deputy, Dinny McGinley, saying in the House, after Deputy Ó...

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: He said there were unseen and unheard-of airstrips that had been developed in Connemara through the benefits of the dormant accounts, as Deputy Martin is well aware.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: The heads of the Digital Hub Development Agency Bill are expected in July. With regard to the establishment Bill in respect of the national children's hospital, work is well under way on the preparation of the general scheme. The intention is that it would be submitted to the Government in July this year. A date for pre-legislative scrutiny is yet to be determined. Both Bills will be...

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: The Deputy is making a good case for the farming community. As he is aware, milk prices are cyclical. The Minister is addressing that already. The movement of cattle and the number of times they are moved is an issue. Obviously, tyres, batteries, oil and everything from fan belts to hydraulics are important elements in the costs applicable to farming these days.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: Yes-----

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: -----I am aware of that, and the cost has risen slightly recently. However, these are matters for discussion under the agriculture Estimates with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: That is a while away. The preparatory work is under way in the Department of Justice and Equality on the cyber-crime Bill. I cannot give the Deputy a more definite answer than that. I will update him on the extent of preparatory work that is involved. In respect of the home care package that the Deputy mentioned, €40 million has been allocated from the Revised Estimate to deal...

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: The WALK PEER project mentioned by the Deputy was funded under the European programme, as I understand. The Minister of State, Deputy McGrath, and the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Leo Varadkar, are meeting with personnel there this week.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: The Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Helen McEntee, has responsibility for mental health and will take a keen and personal interest in this also.

Order of Business (Resumed) (21 Jun 2016)

Enda Kenny: There is no point in trying to do it from one source only. The Deputy is aware that I met with community leaders in the inner city down at St. Laurence O'Toole's School. There were contributions there from 30 or 40 people who are leaders in their own areas. Last night, I met with a range of people, some public representatives and some not. I believe it is important to take into account...
