Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Can I put it in context?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: The NTA has a contract with Applus+ to do the work. It is supposed to deliver within 12 weeks-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: We expect the RSA to enforce that contract. Members of the public are being severely discommoded at present. They are worried about getting penalty points at Garda checkpoints. They are worried about insurance. Most people want their cars roadworthy. I ask the RSA to back to the drawing board with Applus+ and see what it can do to bring this back before Christmas which is two months...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Is Applus+ just a day shift?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Well, I am sorry, but it needs to do night shifts.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Applus+ dropped from 595 to 552 employees and only advertised for staff last July. It only applied for visas for the foreign staff coming in from the Phillipines in September. The 22 staff from Spain, with due respect, are just off the plane. We are public representatives and we have to call it as we see it. The explanations here today are not sufficient and the only way this can be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: With regard to driver testing for people doing tests, the RSA needs to re-engage with the 35 staff that were let go because the number of testers has fallen by that number. They should be a considerable factor in bringing the numbers up to 165. How long will it take to bring the wait from 15 back to ten weeks?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: What is Mr. Walsh's ambition?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: That is still too long.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: It needs to be looked at. Car rental companies, at present, can have nine cars in with the RSA at any one time and they are under considerable pressure to get cars through. They are going to sites with the public and, in many cases, ordinary members of the public are being pushed back. We ask Mr. Walsh to engage with the rental companies to see what can be done.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: We ask that the RSA, with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, engage with foreign operators to see what can be done. It makes no sense that they can apply for a visa through the Department, at which time the RSA works on the licence and then, in many cases, wait many months when they arrive in Ireland before they can drive a truck. That makes no sense. I ask the officials...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Collectively as a committee, we would be very supportive of any additional resources the RSA requires. Whatever it requires, it should come back to us. We will support it in its endeavours with the Department of Transport or any other body.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank the witnesses for coming before the committee at such short notice. I know it has been a rough enough meeting but, at the end of the day, we have a public role and everyone wants to get to the same end. Bringing the NCT waiting times back to 12 days by quarter 2 of next year is too late. Bringing driving test waiting times back to ten weeks by quarter 2 of next year is too late....

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: School Curriculum (11 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: 81. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she and her Department are considering a specified role for physical education teachers in primary schools as part of the primary curriculum review; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [50026/22]

Kieran O'Donnell: 546. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if a response will issue to a request from a Ukrainian family (detailed supplied) that wish to return to Limerick have spent time here after their arrival. [50179/22]

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Healthcare Infrastructure Provision (6 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Can I just say-----

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Healthcare Infrastructure Provision (6 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I welcome the comments from the Taoiseach in the Minister of State's response. It is something we will be following up on.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Healthcare Infrastructure Provision (6 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I have two issues. I mean no disrespect to the Minister of State, Deputy Rabbitte, but I would like to have had the Minister, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, in the Chamber today. He is the Minister with primary responsibility; he should have been here. Second, I wholeheartedly disagree with the Minister for Health's comment that an additional elective facility in Limerick would have minimal...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Healthcare Infrastructure Provision (6 Oct 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I raise the need for an elective hospital in Limerick. It is already Government policy that Cork, Galway and Dublin will get elective hospitals, and it is completely illogical that Limerick and the mid-west are not included. There are a couple of reasons for that. I have been a public representative of Limerick for many years. We have the highest number of people going through the...
