An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: Husna Hasbeni is a two-year-old girl living in County Clare. She is an Irish citizen who has been stuck in Kabul since July along with her four-year-old sister, who was due to start preschool two weeks ago, and her mother and older brother. They are Irish citizens. Their home is 200 yards from my house. I know the family. They are stuck in Kabul. It is devastating and heartbreaking. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I thank NPHET for coming before the committee this morning. I also thank the witnesses for all the work both NPHET and NIAC have done over the past 18 months and continue to do. We are in a pretty good place relative to where we were at the start of this year and in springtime. I have a number of questions. My first question, for Professor Butler, is about vaccines that are outside the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I have two questions I wish to put to Dr. Glynn. The first relates to school buses. NPHET advice and Government policy is that school buses can carry 50% capacity. Yet, all forms of public transport are now gone back up to 100% capacity. I travelled to the Dáil this morning on Irish Rail and there were a lot of people travelling on the train. That is good to see but it is hugely...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I take it this can work quite well in Dublin, where a teenager can hop on their local Dublin Bus service and make their way to school and home again in the afternoon. It is quite different in a rural county like Clare, however, where the local school bus might be bringing children on a 10 km or 12 km journey each day. Many of them are in the same bubble when they go to the school...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Covid-19: Discussion (15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Dr. Holohan. I apologise but I was directing all of the questions to Dr. Glynn because, due to the way Microsoft Teams works, I could not see Dr. Holohan on screen and I thought he had stepped out. I can now see the three witnesses on my screen. I again thank them for updating us on what is going on.

Update on National Broadband Plan: National Broadband Ireland
(15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I confirm that I am in my office in Leinster House. I thank Mr. Hendrick, Ms Collins and Mr. Malone for being available and for engaging with us in our meeting today. They were also available earlier in the day and I took the opportunity to meet them briefly in Buswells Hotel. In particular, I thank them for taking time to travel around the country over the summer and meet with members of...

Update on National Broadband Plan: National Broadband Ireland
(15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Mr. Malone. The important takeaway for us and for the public is that this is a fixed-price contract and that NBI will come in within the price range agreed. As was stated earlier, the ambition is to pull this back from being a seven-year roll-out to a five-year roll-out. People in the rural extremities of Ireland would really appreciate that. The next question for Mr. Malone...

Update on National Broadband Plan: National Broadband Ireland
(15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: That is very good to hear. I presume this will speed things up. Obviously these are initial teething problems but if licences are in place the problem in Cratloe should not be replicated elsewhere in the county or country.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee
Update on National Broadband Plan: National Broadband Ireland
(15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Mr. Malone. In general, where is the roll-out at in County Clare? I have seen the teams working on the ground. In my locality not a day goes by without one of the vans passing on the road. Everyone is anxious to know where the roll-out is at in County Clare and what timelines we can expect in terms of the network being live and available to homes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee
Update on National Broadband Plan: National Broadband Ireland
(15 Sep 2021)

Cathal Crowe: That concludes my questions. I thank the witnesses for their engagement. National Broadband Ireland is the first entity I have seen that has gone beyond the committee room and gone down on the ground to see what is happening and engage with members there. All of the questions I had have been asked with regard to looking into chamber holes and looking up at polls along the roadside. This...
