Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: When I came to this House in 2014, I had a steep learning curve.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: Certainly not.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: Good people like the Leas-Chathaoirleach steered me in the right direction. I was rather shocked to hear this morning's discussion about speaking time, membership groups and so on. One learns very quickly in this House to be a member of a group or to sit in the gods up there.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: Of course it is. I really respect the Leas-Chathaoirleach's ruling on this because he has always acted based on the rules of the House and allowed those of us who are Independent in groups to be treated as group members similar to our colleagues in political parties, whom I deeply respect. I also respect my colleagues who are Independents and have decided not to join a group for technical...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I recognise their right to remain outside a group but, alas and alack, when we make a decision, we must live by the rules.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I have sat here on one occasion for two and a half hours of a debate and, as I got to my feet, I was told, "Sorry, Senator, we are out of time". Such is the price one pays for being an Independent without the support of colleagues. We in the Independent Group are truly independent. We do not really have a Whip and we never agree on anything.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: It is purely a technical issue.

Seanad: Flood Prevention Measures: Statements (18 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to welcome him here. Prior to the Minister of State coming to this House, he was knee-deep in water trying to assist communities. His response in Donegal was second to none. He was in the area within hours of what occurred and he reassured the community. I have tremendous respect for the...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I extend my sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones yesterday. It is tragic that such things happen. I sat and watched the television yesterday and I saw what I would call a clown in Blackrock, Galway, walking along the diving tower to go in for a swim. It might interest the House to know that the tower is there as a direct result of my father saving a woman's life during a...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I substitute the word "misleading" for "lies".

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: Ireland is in the middle of its worst ever housing and homelessness crisis. The Government has committed to opening up every unoccupied house to alleviate the growing housing list. Among the many workers on housing lists are serving soldiers. We recently saw the case of a serving soldier being made homeless in Kildare. Bearing this in mind, I wrote to the Minister, Deputy Eoghan Murphy,...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (12 Oct 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Leader.

Engagement with Mr. Guy Verhofstadt MEP, European Parliament Brexit Co-ordinator

Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Ceann Comhairle. I have no intention of ever entering this House other than to attend meetings such as this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Special Meeting of the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meeting with the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence and the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement
Engagement with Mr. Guy Verhofstadt MEP, European Parliament Brexit Co-ordinator
(21 Sep 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I will press on. I thank Mr. Verhofstadt for attending. I am delighted to hear him talk about the new-found solidarity of a post-Brexit EU in which Irish citizens will not have to pick up the cost of reckless banking across Europe in the future. I will move on from that matter, however. There is a notion that the UK is responsible for the Border and that it is, therefore, its problem....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement on the Future of Europe: National Youth Council and IBEC (20 Sep 2017)

Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Chairman and welcome Ms Vanessa Mulhall and Mr. Robert Nesirky. I am very interested in their proposals on shaping policy and processes in the European Union. As a teacher I often heard people complain about schools and colleges being locked up for the entire summer. I wonder what the representatives of the National Youth Council would think were we to open the Parliament on...
