Seanad: School Books. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I thank the Minister for coming before the House this evening. Just as Senator McCarthy pleaded with her earlier, I also wish to plead with the Minister. I have examined three reports on guidelines on Traveller education in primary schools, guidelines on Traveller education in second level schools and one on pre-schools for Travellers. I have two Traveller friends who are sisters. One of them...

Seanad: School Books. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: Why would a particular school send a bill for €70 home with a child?

Seanad: Inspector of Prisons Reports: Motion. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and I compliment Senator Henry on raising this matter repeatedly on the Order of Business. On Monday, I met Mr. Justice Kinlen to get an update on the recommendations he made in the report on St. Patrick's Institution and in his first two reports on prisons. Mr. Justice Kinlen is a bête noire for the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform....

Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: This is a landmark day in the history of the legislation produced by the Oireachtas. I compliment the Minister of State, his staff and everyone who brought this extraordinary legislation together including Members such as Senator Kett, who worked at it on a daily basis, Senator O'Rourke and Senators Terry and Tuffy, who put their hearts and souls into it. Undoubtedly, people who are disabled...

Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: When we met Mr. Dolan of the Disability Federation——

Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (22 Jun 2005)

Mary White: The responsibility should be covered in the legislation. Some €38 billion is spent each year on infrastructure in the country and generally the disabled are excluded from this Government expenditure. The head of the Disability Federation of Ireland drew our attention to those who are now disabled and who will become disabled in the future, which I had not fully considered. Now that we are...

Mary White: Are the regulations being implemented?

Seanad: Disability Bill 2004: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (22 Jun 2005)

Seanad: Civil Service Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (21 Jun 2005)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Civil Service Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (21 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I spent 19 years in the public sector so I can speak with some authority. This legislation is bringing into line the industrial relations procedures of the Civil Service and private companies. However, I do not believe it will happen in the way it would in a private company. I sense fear in this building. I sense the fear of dealing with industrial relations matters. It is not part of the...

Seanad: Civil Service Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (21 Jun 2005)

Mary White: It happened though.

Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)

Mary White: Irish society has been shocked by the treatment of the McBrearty family. I support the comments made about Senator Higgins and Deputy Howlin and on how they stuck their necks out when it was not popular to do so. It appears that police forces throughout the world at times take on the characteristics of those they are investigating. Consider the police force in Britain which put the Guildford...

Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I want to find out who it was. It was not him. He is more careful.

Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I am making the point that all gardaí are not the same. I like to see justice being done. I understand why Senator McHugh speaks so emotionally. It must be terrible to think like that of every garda in Donegal but it is a terrible situation. In An Agreed Programme for Government there is an elaborate statement about crime and the wishes of the two Government parties.

Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)

Mary White: Whatever about reports, I would like to see action.

Seanad: Morris Tribunal Reports: Motion. (15 Jun 2005)

Mary White: I want more gardaí out of their offices and on the beat. I lost my mobile telephone some months ago and had to go to the Garda station in Dundrum to report it. Why did I have to waste the time of a garda in Dundrum to make a formal report about losing a mobile telephone? I have never heard such nonsense. Time is being wasted in Templemore teaching trainees how to be gardaí only for them to...
