Health (Amendment) Bill 2025: Second Stage (16 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: Sometimes, I come to the House and I am not exactly sure of the relevance of individual Bills or of what negative point the Opposition might make that day. The Opposition could not make a negative point today because this Bill speaks to the core of something we talk about in the country so often. We talk about money being spent, who spent it, why it was spent, who is to blame and where the...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: I wish to raise the issue of safety on our roads and, indeed, footpaths in relation to e-scooters and e-bikes. Last week, while coaching our under-14 hurlers in Leixlip, I noticed that there was an ambulance and a police car at an incident on the road behind us. I went up to investigate. I saw a nine-year-old boy being carried away in an ambulance. He had been cycling his bike and minding...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: This committee has been very informative over the past few weeks and I have learned a huge amount from the people coming in. It is very good to have the ESRI in as well. I have read through the brief and we received the opening statements. I will ask individual questions, but a trend I have identified is that there is almost a fear coming from the Central Bank, the Irish Fiscal Advisory...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: I am just talking about the windfall taxes, because it keeps coming out as a trend.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: The problem with infrastructure is that even though it might be capital, it obviously has a current impact. We can decide we are going to put billions into capital infrastructure but it obviously has a knock-on current impact because it puts more money into the economy.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: They all seem to be very much in agreement on this, though. I have noticed that over the last few weeks.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: I have a specific question there. It might be too specific and Dr. O'Toole might have the answer off the top of his head. Windfall taxes keep coming up and we all know a windfall is defined as something unusual. Do we have a view on how much of our current revenue is based on these windfall corporation taxes?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Quarterly Economic Commentary: Economic and Social Research Institute (15 Jul 2025)

Joe Neville: It is like a bonus to someone's wages in a household budget. We would not be planning the rest of the year on that.

I also know from my own studies where we are getting our energy from. Is it purely related to the price of gas, because Dr. O'Toole...
