Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Gino Kenny: 1. To ask the Minister for Health if he is aware that a nursing home (details supplied) is facing closure; if he will instruct the HSE to take over operation of the home; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25784/24]

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Gino Kenny: There has been a great deal of uncertainty with regard to the future of Lucan Lodge Nursing Home in the past couple of months. Hopefully, the Minister of State can shine a light on the future of the nursing home because the relatives, the staff and everybody involved want to know what is its future of going forward.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Mary Butler: I thank the Deputy for raising this important issue. I also acknowledge and thank him for his constant advocacy on behalf of the residents, families and staff of Lucan Lodge Nursing Home in the past few weeks. I am deeply concerned to learn that HIQA had to cancel the registration of Lucan Lodge Nursing Home. Following concerns for the care and welfare of residents, the chief inspector of...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Gino Kenny: I thank the Minister of State. Those who work in the home and the residents and their relatives are very concerned about its future. There has been ongoing awareness and protests with a view to keeping the facility open. I have a number of questions. Will the HSE consider taking over the facility on a full-time basis? If not, would other providers be interested in taking it over? The...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Mary Butler: The designated centre is a residential care setting operated by Passage Healthcare International (Ireland) Limited. Passage Healthcare has been in examinership but my understanding is that the receiver has removed the protection of examinership and that a liquidator will be appointed. As the Deputy knows, Passage Healthcare also operated Sally Park Nursing Home in Firhouse. Sally Park was...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Gino Kenny: That is relatively good news. If there is a scenario where none of the care providers is in a position to take over, it would be a disaster if facility had to close because it would mean the 50 residents would have to seek other accommodation. There is also the situation of the staff. People are very happy there but they are very worried about the long-term future of the nursing home. It...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Nursing Homes (13 Jun 2024)

Mary Butler: I do not disagree with the Deputy regarding the imbalance that exists. The situation at Lucan Lodge was compounded because the owners of the property are resident in America. An Irish provider that was registered with HIQA was providing the service. Any takeover would be complicated, especially when we are talking about receivership and examinership. I met again with my officials...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 16 - Tailte Éireann (Revised)
Vote 23 - An Coimisiún Toghcháin (Revised)
Vote 34 - Housing, Local Government and Heritage (Revised)
(13 Jun 2024)

Alan Dillon: I welcome the opportunity to discuss with the committee the Estimate for 2024 in the areas of local government, planning, Traveller accommodation and support, and housing for people with a disability and older people. Supporting vulnerable households with their housing needs continues to be of paramount importance. I am particularly pleased, therefore, that more than €271 million...

Vote 16 - Tailte Éireann (Revised)
Vote 23 - An Coimisiún Toghcháin (Revised)
Vote 34 - Housing, Local Government and Heritage (Revised)
(13 Jun 2024)

Alan Dillon: On the scheme itself, back in May we increased the 2024 allocation to €93 million. Some €75 million of that was from the Department and the remaining 20% was matched funding from the local authorities. The scheme delivers up to 13,000 grants each year. We hope to increase that to 15,000 grants. Some local authorities are better than others. We allow local authorities to...

Vote 23 - An Coimisiún Toghcháin (Revised)
Vote 34 - Housing, Local Government and Heritage (Revised)
(13 Jun 2024)

Alan Dillon: Absolutely. We have seen some local authorities request additional funding. Those requests have been honoured on many occasions. We will continue to support local authorities to ensure that priority cases are dealt with. We continuously get feedback. In the Housing for All action plan, there is a commitment to revise the scheme. We will publish the recommendations and implement them as...

(13 Jun 2024)

Alan Dillon: It is at an advanced stage. We hope to publish a revised scheme over the summer period leading into September and quarter 3. We will also need to get a commitment from the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform on any budgetary commitments. The regulations will also need to be updated.

Vote 23 - An Coimisiún Toghcháin (Revised)
Vote 34 - Housing, Local Government and Heritage (Revised)
(13 Jun 2024)

Alan Dillon: I support the comments by the Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, and the Chairman. I know the Chairman has raised this on Committee Stage of the Planning and Development Bill and also on Report Stage in the Dáil. I will work with officials within the local government section, with the Chairman, the Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, and the Minister, Deputy O'Brien, to see what we could...
