- Civil Partnership Bill 2010: Fifth Stage (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: While I respect diversity, even in this House, it would be remiss if the last contribution was allowed to burst the balloon of a happy day. The great consensus in this Chamber supports the speedy passage of this legislation through the Seanad and into law. In that respect, this is a happy day, a major landmark in terms of equality. It is not the final battle, as Deputy Howlin mentioned....
- Civil Partnership Bill 2010: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: Given the nature of this Bill and the prejudices that continue to exist in our society, there may be a higher risk of spurious claims about the mental health of the individuals concerned. Such claims could be aided and abetted by family doctors. I acknowledge this may be just a conspiracy theory. Even in the case of marriage, having only one doctor provide a certificate supporting an...

Paul Gogarty: How much money would be lost to the Exchequer on stamp duty between the passing of this legislation tonight and the passing of the finance legislation? Could an arrangement be made for that intervening period? I believe the amount of money would be small to the Exchequer but would mean quite a bit to the couples involved.
- Civil Partnership Bill 2010: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: I did not want to speak given the nature of the amendments being proposed, the thrust of which I agree with. However, given what Deputy Mattie McGrath just said, the Bill cannot come too quickly. People have waited far too long for it to be passed. - Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: I take on board the Minister of State's remarks about allowing for consultation with the Minister for local elected representatives. In some ways, this increases democracy because often it is the unelected manager who rules the roost. Now, the Minister will be able to set out guidelines and intervene. The Minister will have the power to look at special cases and ensure local issues are...
- Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: They are elected by the people but they are disenfranchising other people just down the road, that is the problem. The rezoning of Adamstown has had major influence on people in Kildare and Lucan. I was involved in the Deliver It Right campaign and Deputy Tuffy made many submissions to An Bord Pleanála on this issue. Local authorities cover specific local areas and the impact of these...

- Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)
Paul Gogarty: Deputy Sherlock, who is not here now, referred to this House being debased. What has debased this House are cute hoor politicians, well-funded by their developer paymasters, who make decisions at national level and who have rezoned land left, right and centre.
