Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Future Licences and Contracts to Connect Data Centres to the Gas Network: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I thank Ms Donnelly.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Future Licences and Contracts to Connect Data Centres to the Gas Network: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I had all those questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Future Licences and Contracts to Connect Data Centres to the Gas Network: Discussion (15 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: The sound bites are so much easier. When one is explaining, one is losing. Sound bites feature all the time in politics. I am always taken by the protest that used be about the telephone masts, where the handwritten sign put up stated, "Call 087 ..., if you want ...". That was okay, but there was no coverage.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Another week has gone by, another week of death and destruction in the Gaza Strip. Countless thousands of lives have been lost in the seven days since we last addressed this issue. The footage on television on a nightly basis, of the dead bodies of infants and newborns unable to survive without electricity, heat and medical intervention is something one would not have expected from any...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the delegation and thank them for the presentation. As always it is thoughtful and helpful. The NPWS has a difficult job but it is a really important one at the moment. As I see it, part of the service's work is encouraging people along the way and that must be recognised. I will take a couple of examples in County Clare, which is obviously the area I know best in that regard....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: It is very clear from my engagement with farmers that they will not continue to be as careful about how they do their business because there is no incentive. They can achieve their new level of payments, which are less than they were getting before, by doing less conservation work. They are trying to survive and this is not helpful. Dr. Bleasdale might also please reflect on the hen...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: It was hugely successful, particularly in the Slieve Aughty Mountains.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: By way of an example, unfortunately, this is again very considerably reducing the payment to the farmers. They are now being standardised across a wider area. All that will do is have other farmers say that it is not worth their while because these are farmers who bought into it and, quite frankly, the State is turning their backs on them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I thank Dr. Bleasdale.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Mr. Ó Donnchú is not given to not stating it as it is.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Young Emily Hand was presumed dead as a result of the 7 October onslaught by Hamas. Over the weekend, a story broke suggesting she may have been in captivity for close to a month. It has brought a sharp focus to the minute detail of what lies at the core of this war. We often get lost in the statistics. How many have been killed on one side and how many on the other? What was the size,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: It would not be allowed under martial law.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Intelligence reigns supreme in Sneem.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. As we are coming towards the end of the session, many of the questions have been asked. I will focus on something a little bit more political and operational rather than scientific. There is no disputing the science, quite frankly. From a political perspective, we must try to find the solutions that allow us, insofar as we can, to manage...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Perhaps that is the frame for my question. To what extent do the EPA representatives see entities other than farming contributing to the problem and how would they quantify that as a percentage? I note that is difficult to do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Absolutely not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: We might come back to that when Dr. Cotter is finished.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Citizens' Assembly Report on Biodiversity Loss: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Sadly, it never gets the same traction or publicity.
