Seanad: Dental Services: Motion (25 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: I am happy to support this extremely important motion calling on the Government to take strong, proactive steps to reform and modernise dental services in Ireland. I lend my support to the call for the Dentists Act 1985 to be updated. The legislation is now four decades old and no longer reflects the realities of a modern dental profession. We need a framework that supports high standards...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Children with Dysplasia and Scoliosis and Related Matters: Discussion (19 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: I am sitting back here looking at Ms Nugent answering all the questions. She is new, so my questions are therefore for Ms Hardiman. Where is the accountability for management’s failure of governance and procurement? Does Ms Hardiman believe she may need to rethink her position on this? This all happened on her watch. Considering what is said about this problem, parents are very...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Children with Dysplasia and Scoliosis and Related Matters: Discussion (19 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: Why was that the case? Why was it coming from all angles and why was there nothing proper, given the importance of our children and their health?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Children with Dysplasia and Scoliosis and Related Matters: Discussion (19 Jun 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Children with Dysplasia and Scoliosis and Related Matters: Discussion (19 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: I know that Ms Hardiman has said at times that she has no recollection of being told about issues. That is different to being actually told, and it concerns me. If it was my child, I would feel that people have a happier workplace and stuff-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Standards of Care, Related Practices and Oversight in Nursing Homes: Discussion (18 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: My first question relates to routine inspections. I am interested in whether, prior to this, routine inspections were carried out during the night or at different hours and without prior knowledge that this would happen? I see the witnesses refer to the testimonies of patients and their families. Patients’ families were being lied to. They were told their parents were being...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Standards of Care, Related Practices and Oversight in Nursing Homes: Discussion (18 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: First, I want to ask about the right to entry when HIQA is inspecting nursing homes. Does the Minister of State agree that HIQA should have to notify nursing homes about inspections? HIQA mentioned the right to entry. Is the Minister of State satisfied with HIQA going to nursing homes in the middle of the night as standard? Has the authority discussed with the Minister of State any other...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Standards of Care, Related Practices and Oversight in Nursing Homes: Discussion (18 Jun 2025)

Teresa Costello: I will come in really quickly. I think the lack of time we had with HIQA and the Minister of State was very disappointing. We had an awful lot more to say. The nursing home was being paid for a service it did not follow through on. Will the Department be seeking reimbursement from the nursing home given that it did not provide the service? I am also interested in what reports the...

Teresa Costello: If nursing homes are not providing the service and basic needs to residents, they should not be getting paid. They should be refunding money. Some kind of penalty has to be in place, if incontinence pads cannot even be purchased.
