Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: General Scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank the witnesses for their presentations and for coming here today. Some of my questions were covered in relation to unaccompanied minors. I understand that 38 had gone missing last year and 29 of them had been separated children. Obviously there is massive pressure on Tusla, including lack of resources. Kate Duggan had mentioned about 570 this year coming in as unaccompanied minors....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: General Scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Given what was identified in that report to do with sexual predators, would Tusla have a concern that it is still ongoing? Obviously there were concerted gangs targeting children in care, in whichever setting, be it Tusla care or IPAS centres.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: General Scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: General Scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I am sorry to be returning to that UCD report, but it grabbed my attention. The report is only from two years ago. It drew parallels regarding what was happening in Ireland with the infamous scandals in Rotherham and Rochdale in Britain, which happened from the 1980s up to 2010. That was a scathing indictment of the authorities in the UK. Basically, the authorities said they knew about it...

Situation in Gaza: Statements (1 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Those on board the humanitarian aid flotilla are under clear and present danger as it approaches the coast of Gaza today. Our own Senator Chris Andrews and Barry Heneghan, TD, are on board. We know that Israel has no bottom line - anything goes, basically - and that, previously, it killed nine people on board a humanitarian aid flotilla, so we must act immediately. Over 20 years ago, I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Apprenticeships: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank the witnesses for their contributions. A recent meeting in Waterford with the IBEC south-east regional executive was very enlightening in many aspects. It was great. Traditionally, we have looked down our noses at apprenticeships. There was a huge drive towards universities back 30 years ago. We are just realising now that we need to go back to basics and we need a lot of basic...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Apprenticeships: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Do the witnesses feel apprentices are paid enough, especially for the traditional crafts needed for housing, etc.?

Insurance Costs: Motion [Private Members] (30 Sep 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: The insurance rip-off, which is what it is, affects every single household, every motorist, every business, every community and every group across this land. We are all getting fleeced by a cartel of insurance companies that are making two to three times more profit here in Ireland than they are in other countries. It is a gangster's paradise basically. That is not speculation; it is fact....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Sep 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank the witnesses for their points and contributions. A special welcome for Professor Campbell, whom I met recently and who is based in my area, the south east. I agree entirely with the points on the borrowing framework and flexibility. One size certainly does not fit all. We also definitely need to change the planning system so you cannot do what was outlined in terms of the...
