Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Special Educational Needs (19 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Acting Chair. Dyslexia is a learning difference that affects about one in ten students, manifesting in a spectrum from mild to severe. As the Minister of State and Senators will be aware, it is legally recognised as a disability under both Irish and EU law. That recognition ensures the right to various accommodations in both education settings and the workplace. In many...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Special Educational Needs (19 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Minister of State. I am aware of the review, but given the mountain of research that has already been conducted on this topic, I believe they have all the evidence they need to make the right decision and finally correct this. I urge the Minister and the Department to engage with the State Examinations Commission as a matter of priority.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I raise the issue of illegal drug use, specifically cocaine. All Members will be aware that usage of this drug has soared in recent years, as has been reflected in every piece of data we see. The HSE's drugs and alcohol helpline produced its latest annual report last month, for the year 2023, in which the helpline received almost 6,000 calls. These were the largest figures since the...

Seanad: Enterprise Matters and Business Supports for SMEs: Motion (18 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I move: That Seanad Éireann: - recognises the clarity in the Programme for Government that sets out the importance of SMEs to our economy; - accepts that given the heightened level of international uncertainty, there is a need to focus on matters within our control which can make the domestic Irish economy more competitive and resilient to economic shocks; - acknowledges the need...

Seanad: Enterprise Matters and Business Supports for SMEs: Motion (18 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: Fianna Fáil believes Irish SMEs are fundamentally important to the Irish economy, currently and for future economic success. That is my view also. As Members will be aware, I have spoken often about how SMEs are the backbone of the Irish economy. Some 99.8% of businesses in Ireland are classified as SMEs and 68% of employees work for SMEs. Our SMEs are the lifeblood of cities, towns...

Seanad: Enterprise Matters and Business Supports for SMEs: Motion (Resumed) (18 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Senators for their support this evening, more or less across the board. All Senators were very supportive and I appreciate that. As we are all aware, Private Members' time is precious and supporting small businesses and sending a strong message to the Government is vital. It shows. Most of us brought the human side to it to with our backgrounds, so that is vitally important....

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I thank our guests for the presentation and information they gave us. With regard to the corporate sustainability reporting directive, how does the Department intend to support businesses, particularly SMEs, in handling the additional administrative burden it will impose?

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (18 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: There was some concern that the omnibus proposals will remove the obligation on larger companies to assist smaller business partners in reporting under the CSRD. Does the Department have a view on this?

Ollie Crowe: I thank Mr. Forde. Will the Department provide updated guidance and advice to businesses throughout the process as changes continue to be made to the CSDDD and to the CSRD?

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (11 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: The omnibus has been described as a response to a collective view that there was too much change too fast. My point would be that the regulation was developed prior to the factors coming to the fore in recent years, namely energy inflation, geopolitical challenges, global trade uncertainty and regulatory change in other jurisdictions. The environment in which they were expected to be...

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (11 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: The Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights has expressed concern about what this will mean for climate accountability. Along with the omnibus directive, the clean industrial deal was also launched which reaffirms the EU's commitment to meaningful action and seeks to put in place support mechanisms to push businesses forward in meeting sustainability goals. Does the clean industrial...

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (11 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: I have some questions for IBEC. Significant concerns were raised prior to the omnibus directive that the vast majority of businesses are not ready to report and need to divert resources from sustainability actions to reporting compliance. Is that the experience of IBEC members or does the omnibus address it sufficiently? Is it likely to remain an issue further down the line?

Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (11 Jun 2025)

Ollie Crowe: My research indicates that 48% of German firms delayed investment and the reason they gave was that there was unclear due diligence on their obligations. Are we moving quickly enough to get this legislation through or is the country losing out?
