Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Martin Kenny: There is no upfront payment. I will move on to the huge problem we have in my part of the country with the windblow since Christmas. A lot of forestry was blown down. A lot of it has been granted licences. Some had licences already. Many have been issued licences since. There are still some problems in getting licences for people where various objections have been lodged and different...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Martin Kenny: If I divide that by 9,500 jobs, it makes one job per 92 ha approximately. The point is that in my part of the country many people are negative about forestry. The reason is that whole parishes and townlands have been wiped out because farm after farm has been planted, not usually by farmers, but by companies which bought the land farmers could not compete for. There is a lot of negativity....

Commission of Investigation (Handling of Historical Child Sexual Abuse in Day and Boarding Schools) Order 2025: Motion (15 Jul 2025)

Martin Kenny: This is a positive step and a step in the right direction after many years of waiting. Like most public representatives, over the years I too have met and spoken with people from my constituency and other places who have been the victim of sexual abuse in schools. Sometimes it was an institution and sometimes it was not. The one thing that certainly strikes me is that the two were not...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Farm Safety: Discussion (9 Jul 2025)

Martin Kenny: I thank all our witnesses for their opening statements. I grew up on a farm and we did a bit of contracting in a small way but it was 165s and 135s and smaller tractors than they have nowadays. We would put them in the link box with what they use today. I see youngsters driving very heavy machinery. I know they are probably a lot safer in the sense that they have better cabs on them and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Farmer Mental Health and Well-being: Discussion (9 Jul 2025)

Martin Kenny: One thing that always strikes me about agriculture and farming is we have this model within it where, for instance, there is social farming, whereby we bring people who have got mental health issues or are service users with intellectual disabilities out to a farm and out to nature, with animals and all of that, which is really positive for their mental health. Yet, we have this sort of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jul 2025)

There is also more recognition...
