Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I even know the figure. The total package is approximately €300,000. When the budgetary Revised Estimates are looked at every year and one sees how much additional money the HSE gets to pay compensation, legal fees and stuff, it is really frustrating for families to be in that situation for so long. They have been very open and frank with me. They have given me full permission to...

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: Chair, can I come back in on that?

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: Dr. Muldoon mentioned €150,000, which you would find on the back of a stamp in here. That is how little money it is. As I said earlier, I do heed the requirement about investments.

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: In the Revised Estimates for 2018 an additional €250 million was given to the HSE. This was not to improve services, if you know what I am saying. It was not as much last year; it was around €56 million. It just goes to show how money is not being spent properly when we have this document ready to go but we cannot get it done for a couple of hundred thousand euro. We speak...

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I want to correct the record. I made a mistake earlier.

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I did.

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I put my hand up straight away. The Minister of Health passed on my case to another Minister. That is the only response I did get. I must give credit where it is due. Like Dr. Muldoon's experience, when a Department is contacted, it is not their responsibility and issues go from one Department to another. I just wanted to put that on the record.

Committee on Public Petitions: Ombudsman for Children's Annual Report 2022: Office of the Ombudsman for Children (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: We will make the headlines with that one.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: It will be interesting to see what response comes back.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I agree that there is a great deal of correspondence. Many responses that came back are regulations about how they do X, Y and Z, but nothing real or formal. One of the responses indicates that under SI 460/2009, "The AAIU shall be functionally independent of the State aviation authorities responsible for the operation or regulation of airworthiness, certification, flight operations,...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I agree with that.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: it is agreed. There is a fairly comprehensive response.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: No, just to thank all the staff again. We have just a summary but there are reams of research and responses going to and fro among the whole committee. I thank them for their work, as always.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (9 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: Special guest.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Flood Relief Schemes (2 May 2024)

Pat Buckley: I reiterate what my two Cork East colleagues were saying about the flooding. I thank the Minister of State. I met him in Midleton and I put in a number of parliamentary questions which, in fairness, the responses were fairly detailed. I echo what previous speakers said. The three problems here are fear, frustration and the pace. It seems there are solutions but it is about the pace at...

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on Kiltimagh Water Scheme: Discussion (25 Apr 2024)

Pat Buckley: I have been observing most of this meeting. In our job, we listen to two sides of the story and somewhere in the middle is the truth. We are very familiar with this. It is down to communication, unfortunately, whether it is the people of Kiltimagh or anywhere else. We have had issues before with communications with county councils breaking down, memorandums of understanding being signed...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Apr 2024)

Pat Buckley: That is agreed. An awful lot of work has gone into that but, my God, we will have to get to the end of it at some stage. It is going on too long. It is mad.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Apr 2024)

Pat Buckley: That is agreed. We are limited in this regard.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Apr 2024)

Pat Buckley: I echo the Chair's sentiments. It is a disgrace. For the benefit of the people out there, it is just a matter of having 10% additional time for these people. That is all it is. It is not millions and millions. It is about the urgency, but also the regression if they are not given enough time to do these junior certificate exams, for example. They will not progress to the next stage....

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (25 Apr 2024)

Pat Buckley: No. I just thank everybody for facilitating the meeting today. People never see the reams of paperwork and research that goes into this. I thank everybody involved.
