Seanad: Gradam an Uachtaráin Bill 2015: Second Stage (9 Dec 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: This is the awards season. I have been at numerous sports awards and banquets in the past week and even today there are The Irish Timesawards. Next week the Irish Independentawards will be announced. We will have the RTE awards and the BBC sports personalities awards. We will even have the Queen’s list coming out in the new year. Only last week, we had the People of the Year...

Seanad: Gradam an Uachtaráin Bill 2015: Second Stage (9 Dec 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: In the early 1920s, a system was introduced relating to the Order of St. Patrick but that came to an end when in 1928, the council decided that the order being now moribund should be allowed to completely disappear. Efforts were made by numerous people throughout the years to restore it. Éamon De Valera and Seán Lemass both considered reviving those awards, as did Brian Lenihan...

Eamonn Coghlan: I move:That, pursuant to subsection 2° of section 2 of Article 25 of the Constitution, Seanad Éireann concurs with the Government in a request to the President to sign the Residential Tenancies (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2012 on a date which is earlier than the fifth day after the date on which the Bill shall have been presented to him.

Eamonn Coghlan: Next Tuesday.

Seanad: Services for People with Asthma: Motion (18 Nov 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I would also like to thank and congratulate Senator Mary Ann O'Brien and Senator Power for bringing the motion to the House. I had not intended to be here or even to speak on the motion today. I had a meeting upstairs in my office and changed my mind about attending when I heard Senator Mary Ann O'Brien speak in an up-front fashion. I was...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome Senator Máiría Cahill and wish her the very best of luck in Seanad Éireann. I express my disgust at the atrocities which occurred in Paris. It has shaken the very core of the world's liberty and has instilled fear in our society. When we think of going out to enjoy a concert, dinner, date or drink, one never knows the hour or the day when something like this will...

Seanad: National Cultural Institutions (National Concert Hall) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (11 Nov 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I support the Minister on this sensitive issue. Precedence has been set in other statutory bodies and I shall give the Irish Sports Council, which is now Sport Ireland, as an example. Section 18(9) states, "The chief executive officer shall not question or express an opinion on the merits of any policy of the Government or a Minister of the Government or on the merits of the objectives of...

Seanad: National Cultural Institutions (National Concert Hall) Bill 2015: Second Stage (3 Nov 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: The Minister is very welcome to the House. Like Senator Ó Murchú, I am delighted to speak on this legislation. I compliment the Minister on bringing it to the House. As the Minister said, the purpose of the Bill is to provide for the conversion of the National Concert Hall from a company limited by guarantee into a statutory body. Various sections outline the functions of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I thank the representatives of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and Sport Ireland for appearing before the joint committee. This matter seems to be dragging on and I am not sure we will get anywhere with it. This is the first time since I became a Member of the Oireachtas that the resignation of a sports coach has been discussed in a committee. The reason this issue has come before us...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: The first direct question concerned funding for the high performance director and the contributions the IABA, Irish Amateur Boxing Association, made to that. What percentage of its overall funding comes from non-taxpayer sources?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: In the proposed change in the contract for Billy Walsh, it was to ensure the IABA could keep Billy Walsh on while the Irish Sports Council suggested it would cover whatever costs there were. What contribution would the IABA have made to retain Billy Walsh’s services?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: A Drimnagh man.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: Does Sport Ireland have confidence in the board of the IABA and its chief executive officer?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Departure of High Performance Unit Head Coach: IABA and Sport Ireland (28 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: There are no problems whatsoever inside the ring. Athletes from other sports are reminded many times of how wonderful the boxers are and how many medals they have won over the past 50 years by the gentlemen opposite, with glee in their eyes. There are, however, some problems outside of the ring. Today, we see the problems are about trust, communication, respect and credibility. That is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sport Ireland: Chairperson Designate (21 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome Mr. Mulvey to the committee. From a personal perspective and in my role as a Senator, I thank Mr. Mulvey for his leadership of and dedication to the Irish Sports Council since his appointment. Having been on the board of the Irish Sports Council and having chaired the high performance committee I have witnessed at first hand exactly what the Irish Sports Council has delivered....

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I would like to add to Senator Mooney's comments because my phone has been ringing off the hook over the past number of days with regard to the resignation, if I may call it that, of the great Billy Walsh. My response to people has been that there is nothing I can do. They have said, "Well you're a Senator, you should be able to raise the issue and do something about it." Last week, we...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: His biggest problem was that he became too successful. I certainly know that one is never regarded as a prophet in one's own land. I got to know Billy Walsh at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. Over the years since, I have found him to be a very humble, proud and brilliant leader in our sports community. He is the ultimate professional. He leaves no stone unturned in his preparation....

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: Last week, I made reference to a debate in the Seanad on a sports strategy. I also alluded to the fact that the weekend would be bookended with our Irish soccer team playing against Germany in Dublin and our rugby team playing in the Rugby World Cup. We enjoyed the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat on both ends, but sadly the weekend was tainted by the catastrophic fire in...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: It is time to give credit where it is due. In that context, I wish to give credit to the Government because it has increased funding for sport by 40%. This is up from the 2015 figure and it will assist with the completion of the national indoor arena at Abbottstown. I say "Well done" to the Government and that it is time to give credit where it is due.
