Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Planning Challenges in Offshore Renewable Energy: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: My questions are for Ms Brien. The representatives of fishers talk about the issue of spatial squeeze. I assume the marine protected areas will advance in due course. When we are looking at sites for offshore renewable energy and marine protected areas, where does the fishing community fit in? My next question relates to the fisheries management and mitigation strategy, FMMS. Have the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Planning Challenges in Offshore Renewable Energy: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: I am happy if Mr. Kelly wants to take the question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Planning Challenges in Offshore Renewable Energy: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: Ms Brien suggested that we bring in the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment to deal with issues that were outstanding. The issue of reassuring fishers that they will not be blocked from fishing, which Mr. Moran spoke about in his presentation, is important. Maybe we could bring the Department in to address those issues in the autumn.

Select Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 29 - Climate, Energy and the Environment (Revised)
Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Revised)
(15 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: As the Minister of State knows, there will continue to be a demand for fish. It is a crucial form of food for the world. When we appear to be getting squeezed on quota, we need to look at every avenue to create wealth in coastal communities. I will leave it at that because we have had good engagement on it. The Minister of State has spoken about investment in harbours and fishery...

Coroners (Amendment) Bill 2025: First Stage (9 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: I am very proud to join in this renewed effort along with Deputies Ward and Guirke. I welcome to the Public Gallery the McGill Lynch family, whom I worked with in the past, and also Jim and Vera Connell, who have joined them. Jim and Vera are here because the issue has not gone away. There was a missed opportunity when I introduced this legislation as a Senator. The Government said it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Taoiseach (9 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: The programme for Government commits to the six surgical hubs, two in Dublin, and one each in Waterford, Limerick, Cork and Galway. There is a big concern about this above the Galway-Dublin line. The programme for Government committed to explore the establishment of a surgical hub in the north west. In a recent radio interview on Highland Radio in Donegal, the Minister of State, Deputy...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Taoiseach (9 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: I welcome the clarification because there is a lot of anxiety in Donegal about it. As the Taoiseach will know, all Government and Opposition representatives in Donegal are making the case because we are really concerned that there is a threat to our emergency services. It is a genuine threat because of the crisis in surgical services. I agree with what the Taoiseach said about the...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: No. There is a story on RTÉ today about the 257 post offices that have closed in the past ten years. Of them, 56 were in towns and cities. This is not just a rural issue. We need to have statements and for the Minister to come in. We know from the Irish Postmasters' Union that the existence of 40% of the remaining post offices is threatened unless the Government provides serious...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Fishing Industry (3 Jul 2025)

Pádraig Mac Lochlainn: I apologise for being a little late and thank my colleague, Deputy Conor McGuinness, for introducing my question. I appreciate that the Minister of State is new to his role but my difficulty is that what he has just read out was said to me again and again by the previous Minister for agriculture, Deputy McConalogue. This is an uninhabited rock and there is just no basis under...
