Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: With regard to An Bille Gaeltacht 2012, while the Seanad agenda and availability of the Minister may dictate that it be taken next week, I believe it would be reasonable that people are given an opportunity to review it. I am not trying to be controversial but I would welcome if that could be facilitated. The report into the death of children in the child protection agency is appalling....

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: I join with previous speakers who spoke about the ESRI report. The report concluded that four out of ten families would be better off, however one defines "better off", on the dole, and that 44% of people with children are better off not working. I do not want to be repetitive but from a psychological and social point of view it does nobody any good to be on the dole, sitting at home,...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: Could the Leader arrange for the Minister for Justice and Equality to come to the House or at least convey to him that we hope the introduction of regulation to cover moneylending and debt collection would be considered by the Department of Justice and Equality?

Seanad: Decade of Commemorations: Statements (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the Minister to the House and thank him for coming in today. I am glad to see he is taking the decade of commemorations so seriously. As Senator Ó Murchú has said, the commemorations are in good hands. This is an issue on which we need leadership and it is evident the Minister is taking the lead. From 1912 to 1922 was a pivotal decade in Irish history. As Lenin once put it:...

Seanad: Decade of Commemorations: Statements (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: I am interested to hear the Minister's views. He is quoted as saying that he would expect proposals to go to Cabinet in the next two weeks. I am sure that people working in the arts sector would be happy to linger a little longer to ensure that matters are considered and that the proper decision is made. I commend the Minister for his leadership and his initiative on the commemorations....

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: I join others in speaking about the constitutional convention. I believe it is a very crude approach to decide that one arm of the Houses of the Oireachtas should be cut off. The Seanad is intrinsically part of our Constitution and it makes no sense to have a constitutional convention without having the Seanad in those considerations.

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: While I am a member of a Government party, I am not shy in saying that.

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: It will be a very difficult time for us in this House and we should be given due consideration and should be facilitated with a debate. There have been calls for the Taoiseach to come here in the past. It would be no harm to have him in for a full and frank discussion on area.

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: It is.

Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Jun 2012)

Catherine Noone: I was alarmed to read this morning figures on the sale of the morning after pill. Some pharmacies have increased their sales of the morning after pill from 30 to 90 per week, which is astonishing. This is something that should be a last resort but this indicates that perhaps it is being used as a contraceptive. Young women in many instances are putting themselves at risk of sexually...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: That is politics.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the news from Europe that there is to be no change to the proposed treaty. That will bring the necessary certainty to the issue and the importance of the need for the public to vote "Yes" in the forthcoming referendum. Those advocating a "No" vote must take note of it and stop misleading the public. I support what Senator Susan O'Keeffe said about Libertas in particular, which...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I enjoin the comments of previous speakers. The figures in respect of elder abuse are astonishing. There were 2,302 allegations of abuse made to the HSE last year according to the figures published today. As other speakers have noted, this represents a 9% increase. God only knows how many cases have occurred which have gone unreported, which is usually the case with these statistics....

Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I am glad Senator Keane drew our attention to the Headstrong survey. This is an issue which I have raised regularly and I will not stop doing so until we make an impact. Headstrong surveyed 14,000 young people in this country and found that one in three had mental health problems. One fifth had considered self-harm and six out of ten were stressed about their financial situation. The...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Yes, we had a debate on low-cost selling of alcohol.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Charity hugging, or chugging.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the announcement yesterday that the rate of VAT on tourism products will remain at 9%. I have received feedback from the Restaurants Association of Ireland and employers in the industry throughout the city of Dublin that this announcement gives them certainty in planning prices and menus for the next year. It is to be welcomed and is helping employment in the industry. I support...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I am. I suggest we have a debate on our attitude in general to drinking and matters such as how young people dress. The need to clean up the city is not confined to O'Connell Street. I suggest we have a debate similar to the one we had on older people. We would not need to have a Minister present, but we should invite representatives of interested bodies, including Dublin City Council and...
