Catherine Noone: The Senator will be shot for saying that here.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I join with Senators Zappone and Mullins in commenting on the behaviour in the House last Thursday. We made a case for our abolition and there is no question about it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I know it is last week's business but it is relevant.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I will come to my question for the Leader. To leave anyone outside the Chamber for an hour an a half, especially the Tánaiste, is ridiculous.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I welcome the stimulus package introduced today. It has an emphasis on construction which we all welcome. In particular I welcome the fact that my home town of Claremorris will receive a primary care centre.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I wish to return to the question of sponsorship by alcohol companies of the arts and sport. I understand the concerns being expressed about it. The Seanad would be an ideal forum to debate how we can come up with other revenue sources for sports and the arts. It is a valid concern. Even the Dublin film festival is sponsored by a big alcohol brand, and the director of the festival believes...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: On both sides.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: Like previous speakers, I would welcome a debate on suicide. Some 525 people took their own lives last year, which represented an increase of 7% on the previous year. Approximately 85% of those who died through suicide were young men. As Senator Daly said, it is a scourge on this generation. The mental health area is neglected within the health system. Suicide, in particular, needs to be...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I do not have a question on that point. I would like to call again for a debate on suicide.
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: The issue I raise may appear frivolous in the context of disabled children and similar issues raised by other Senators. I was disappointed to learn that Ireland will host a "Toddlers & Tiaras"-style children's beauty pageant later this year. It appears the organisers have managed to secure a venue for the event in question. This is one American export that we could do without. Beauty...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: -----not to allow their children to participate in it. Children should be allowed to enjoy childhood activities such as cycling and playing in parks rather than being dressed up, having make-up applied, their hair done and tiaras placed on their heads to look like mini-adults. I strongly discourage these types of pageant.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: That is totally untrue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: It does, actually.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I am loth to repeat what has already been said. I agree in particular with the points made by Senators Labhrás à Murchú and Michael Mullins on the events in the Phoenix Park at the weekend. I take this opportunity to express my sympathies to the families of those affected. Nobody expects a young person who goes out in the evening to attend a concert not to return home. In my...
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I refer to the point about Members of the other House claiming travel expenses to travel the country for campaign purposes. It has brought attention on themselves. These were law makers who were travelling the country-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I will finish my point if the Leas-Chathaoirleach will indulge me. They were travelling the country as law makers and encouraging the citizens of the State to break the law. This should not be encouraged and these expenses will be difficult to justify. I do not disagree with Senator Norris's general point on the media but the salient point is that law makers should not be encouraging...
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: They will take it outside.
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2012)
Catherine Noone: I join with the remarks made by previous Senators in regard to the Ulster Bank issue, in respect of which we are all agreed there has been a lack of communication and competence on the part of the bank to deal with its systems failure. Everyone is crying out for accountability in respect of the banking sector. It is hoped that this issue will be sorted out sooner rather than later and that...
- Seanad: Gaeltacht Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Jun 2012)
Catherine Noone: I propose that the sitting suspend for a number of minutes.
