Micheál Martin: Question 1: To ask the Taoiseach the details of the issues he discussed at the meetings and or bilaterals he had when he attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4761/12]

Official Engagements (28 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: I thank the Taoiseach for his reply. He has been attending Davos for years and speaking at similar high-level events. It was the first time that a Taoiseach made comments that reverberated significantly and somewhat negatively at home. The main theme of the Taoiseach's public comments was that Ireland was doing better because of the 2011 budget against which he voted. That was fair...

[10282/12]

Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: With regard to forthcoming legislation and to put the record straight, there was no mention of €2 billion or €5 billion for the sale of State assets in the original memorandum of understanding agreed with the troika. That was something the Government decided to include in line with Fine Gael's policy, in particular, and it is wrong to continue to mislead people about this fact. The...

Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: When will the Government bring forward legislation to facilitate the sale of Coillte assets, the energy division of Bord Gais and minority stakes in the ESB and Aer Lingus? Will the Taoiseach outline a timeline for the introduction of legislation that the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform promised outside the House this morning?

Order of Business (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: The Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Shatter, issued a guidance document on surrogacy and citizenship yesterday evening. This is a serious issue for a number of families. In the document he promised legislation to deal with these matters. I ask the Taoiseach to indicate when he expects that legislation to come before the House. In the interim, I ask him to take a personal...

Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: Despite all the election promises and Government spin, many people's experience of the health service is becoming worse by the day. Dismissing the board of the Health Service Executive without putting in place an alternative has prompted inquiries as to who is in charge of the health service. Many medical card holders, particularly those with chronic illnesses, are waiting far too long for...

Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: The National Treatment Purchase Fund worked. However, the moneys allocated to it have now disappeared into the big black hole of the SDU and the wider system. As a result, waiting lists have become longer. Masking the real story, rather than tackling the lists, has become the priority. Will the Government consider reinstating the National Treatment Purchase Fund, with an exclusive focus on...

Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: The Taoiseach did not answer my question on waiting times. The 12 month period was a reinvention by the Minister to cover the fact that the international target of six months was the target set for the National Treatment Purchase Fund and that the vast majority of categories had come within the period of three to six months under its stewardship. What has happened is a con job. The €85...

Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: Last week I raised a number of issues. The Taoiseach's office got back to me on a particular case, which I acknowledge. However, it should not have to come to this. As soon as one case was referred to the Taoiseach, I was made aware of another of people having to wait too long and getting bad results from the centre.

Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2012)

Micheál Martin: This needs to be sorted out. This morning a consultant was speaking about emergency medicine in paediatric care, not waiting times. The issue of emergency medicine needs to be sorted out through dealing with a bed capacity issue in paediatric hospitals. It can and should be done immediately.
