Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: I welcome our two guests. Some of my questions might be repetitive, for which I apologise. What I very much want to touch on pertains to Senator Cassell's final remarks. My understanding from people within RTÉ is that in spite of the court cases lost - I am not sure how far these go back - in Anne RoperversusRTÉ the organisation was found to discriminate-----

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: She has not answered it. I am talking about a court case in the public domain. RTÉ has not changed the policy. With two ladies at the helm - and I wish them well and have no animosity towards them - I am surprised that this policy has not changed. People are getting emails nine months before they are due to retire to tell them that the date is coming. Ms Forbes has said she would...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: Did Ms Forbes every hear the adage that he who plays the piper calls the tune? I will be able to ask parliamentary questions to ascertain that, but it was unfair, unbalanced and the one narrative, with nothing or nobody else involved. Ms Forbes is not answering the questions, but I cannot make her do so. I am very unhappy. With regard to coverage of the fleadh, it is a wonderful event....

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: I thank Ms Doherty. I appreciate the archive is very important. Given that at the time door-to-door surveys were not permitted, how were the surveys, which gave such magnificent results, undertaken? What method was used?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: Was the survey carried out by telephone or online?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ's Public Service Statement, Irish Language Services and RTÉ Board Appointments Process: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: Fair enough. I ask Ms Doherty and Ms Forbes to look at the ladies under their care, some of whom are very unhappy and feel bullied and threatened. That is not good enough. RTÉ has been already found by the courts to not be treating people fairly. I would expect people to be looked after, especially in the current climate.

Leaving Certificate: Motion (25 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: I am also pleading with the Minister and her departmental officials on this. I know she has had a tough time and a baptism of fire. I wish her well in the post and I support her. These students, however, had no junior certificate and no proper schooling for the previous two years. They have had an awful time because they could not have fun or enjoy themselves. This is so important and...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: The Taoiseach promised numerous times in this Chamber and in the convention centre that he would meet the action group for St. Brigid's hospital in Carrick-on-Suir, which his Minister closed unceremoniously in the middle of the so-called pandemic. Will the Taoiseach meet those people or why does he keep telling us that he will? It is a simple request to meet the committee and the Taoiseach...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: They are not agreed.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jan 2022)

Mattie McGrath: The price of oil was raised on Leaders’ Questions. The AA has now done a survey to say that we are one of the highest countries in the world for petrol and diesel prices. We had over 32 increases last year. The miserly €100 that is promised for later on in the year, perhaps March or April, will not go anywhere near helping people. The cost of everything, including groceries,...
