Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (24 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: Senator Boyle is going to Waterford on Saturday to tell the people about the cuts.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (24 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: I second Senator Healy Eames's motion. If we are to have cancer treatment centres of excellence, it is essential they are given adequate resources. If they do not get such resources, it is a serious matter which we must debate. I wish the new Cabinet well. I also wish my colleague in the south east, the Minister of State, Deputy Seán Connick, well. He was my colleague on the South-East...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (24 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: He is not at the Cabinet table.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (24 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: He is not Minister for Defence. Deputy Tony Killeen is Minister for Defence.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: The people are demoralised and the debacle at the Passport Office on Molesworth Street is only one of the many bushfires raging around the country. We can see the very real effects of the warning signals given many months ago about the divide between public and private sector workers. It sad to see workers and citizens being pitted against each other in such a public manner just a few...

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: I appreciate that but I call for a wider debate in order that all Senators can contribute to a discussion on the sea and air rescue service which is being denuded in the south-east region. Coastal communities will be neglected as a result. This is a despicable decision to make on an island nation but it is not too late to reverse it, which is why I call for a debate on the issue. The...

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: The Senator's priorities are all wrong.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: If the Green Party had its way, it would abolish rural Ireland.

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: I welcome the Minister of State to hear the Adjournment matter on this very important and emotive issue for all citizens who live in the south-east region. No one knows when an accident or emergency at sea or any place will occur. It is ridiculous that this Government is once again cutting our frontline emergency services in an attempt to save costs without any transparency around the...

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: This does not do anything more to reassure me or the people of the south-east region. The Minister of State has stated there has been much ill-informed comment. I suggest the response she has given has ill-informed the public. She has mentioned there is co-ordination with UK search and rescue services. I have news for her. Services are also being diminished in the south-west region of...

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: My question is as follows. How on earth can the Minister of State see this as an improvement when there is a reduction in the number of hours and cover from a 24-hour to a 12-hour service?

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: That is not an improvement. The Minister of State has stated the helicopters used will reach the area of crisis or emergency faster. That is fine if they are based in Waterford, but if they are travelling from Shannon, Dublin or Sligo, how on earth could they be faster in responding to an emergency?

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: What the Minister of State has told the House is pure rubbish and the people of the south east will not accept it. I will not accept it. I am emotive about the issue. The Government will face stiff opposition in implementing this measure from the people of the south east and across all parties.

Seanad: Marine Safety. (23 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: This is a serious issue, on which the Government is not reading the public mood.

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: Was the Senator hanging her stockings on the balcony?

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: This is an interesting amendment. The issue arises as a consequence of modern living conditions and standards. When people lived in traditional houses, they would have had a back yard or back garden in which to put up a clothesline. I am not saying I come down on either side of the argument because we would not want to have all kinds of unsightly paraphernalia and various items of attire,...

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: This is similar to Senator O'Toole's amendment and Fine Gael's amendment No. 21, which I will not elaborate on further. The thrust of this and the related amendments is to secure an element of the purchase price to ensure the development or units being built are completed to a satisfactory standard. We are all at one on that issue. These amendments come highly recommended by the Royal...

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: I can understand from where the Minister is coming. I understand that if there was a 5% levy or charge for finishing estates that developers would load it onto the purchase price. However, we need to learn from the mistakes of the very recent past. We have all seen - and I am sure they are also in the Minister's constituency - the impact of unfinished estates and developments on those who...

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: In fairness, they might be protecting their clients' interests.

Seanad: Multi-Unit Developments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (10 Mar 2010)

Paudie Coffey: Perhaps for the same reason as the Minister in not wishing to implement the proposal on the 5%.
