Brian Leddin: I thank Mr. Fitzgerald. For our sins, many of us are on Twitter and suffer daily. Did Dr. Moore want to come in on that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: Mr. Keane has about 60 seconds to cover a very important and significant area.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: Mindful of the nature of Deputy O'Sullivan's questions, I would like if we could keep the discussion looking forward. Our guests have much to tell us about how agriculture can play its role and they have done so already and may elaborate on that. While the Deputy's questions are valid, I do not want to put our guests on the spot either.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: That was nice and succinct. Our two hours have elapsed. I thank Mr. Keane, Mr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Moore for joining us today. It was a very enlightening session for me and, I expect, most members of the committee. It will certainly help us in our deliberations on the report which is to come next month.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: The Cost of Climate Action: Discussion (17 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I have been following the debate with interest. It is an important debate and I do not think we get into enough of the detail. Fundamentally, everybody here should want to protect livelihoods across rural Ireland and farmers will be doing a lot of the work we need to address climate change. I want to speak mostly about transport but I will pick up Deputy Durkan's point about the...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: The Cost of Climate Action: Discussion (17 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: That was directed in particular to Ms Samsonova because she is the transport author of the OECD report but I am happy for Mr. McCabe or Ms Capozza to come in on it.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: The Cost of Climate Action: Discussion (17 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I am mindful that there are just over 20 minutes left, so I will be brief. Previously, we spoke about the cost-benefit analyses of infrastructural projects. On the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action, which I Chair, a theme that surfaced repeatedly was that our methodologies for appraising major infrastructural projects were inappropriate for the challenges facing us. The...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: The Cost of Climate Action: Discussion (17 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: Ms Samsonova mentioned the UK but are there other countries we should look to, perhaps in Europe, that have those qualitative methods built into their appraisal approach?

Common Agricultural Policy: Statements (16 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I will keep my points brief, as my time is limited. While the negotiators continue to work towards a consensus on CAP, it is worth highlighting that the current state of play is demonstrative of the divergences within and between the agricultural sector and policymakers. There is a misalignment between policies, funding mechanisms and the views of people who manage and work on farms. On...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (15 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: This might have been broached already as I joined the meeting late. Apologies if witnesses have already answered this. I thank the witnesses for coming before us; it is much appreciated. From what I have heard, the focus is on what the State or the Government needs to do in order to support organic. However, I will turn it a little bit. What are the organisations doing to encourage their...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (15 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I welcome our guests and thank them for their attendance. Ms Westbrook said earlier that we should not be afraid to highlight the environmental attributes of organics. I could not agree more. Perhaps it is not said enough. One of the attributes she did not mention, which I am sure she would mention if she had another go, was reducing emissions, which is a significant focus of the State...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (15 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I have just looked at my calendar and that does not suit me either.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: Apologies have been received from Deputy Devlin. On behalf of the committee, I welcome Professor Alan Matthews of Trinity College Dublin and Ms Sadhbh O'Neill of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. They are very welcome to today's meeting and I thank them for coming before us to share their expertise. On privilege, I remind witnesses of the long-standing parliamentary practice that they...

Brian Leddin: Thank you, Professor Matthews. I now call Ms O'Neill to make her opening statement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2021)

Brian Leddin: I thank Ms O'Neill. I will invite questions from members. Some have indicated already. Please note this meeting is confined to a maximum of two hours. I propose that each member be given two minutes to address his or her questions to the witnesses in order to ensure that all members get an opportunity to pose their questions. If we have time, we will go for a second or, indeed, third...
