Gerry Horkan: I am not able to do philosophical questions during the debate.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I am not being at all flippant about this issue, by the way.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: The Minister of State was responding to Senator Craughwell, and Senator Doherty had already indicated that she wished to speak. She will speak next and then I will bring Senator Craughwell back in.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I support Senator Mullen's call for a debate about Nigeria and what is happening there in terms of the persecution of people of the Catholic faith. I do not make any reference to the President. Religious freedom is something we all value and we need to have a discussion about it. I also congratulate all of those people, in particular in Sandycove, in my local authority area of Dún...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: Senator Malcolm Byrne may say that, but I will not have a go like that. I congratulate the Irish Aviation Authority, IAA, on the official opening yesterday of the brand new air traffic control tower in Dublin Airport. It was built due to a very significant investment by the State to facilitate the new runway, which will open in August. I congratulate the IAA on that. Perhaps the Deputy...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the Minister of State for his very comprehensive summary of the position we find ourselves in. I am conscious that the ruling is effective until 16 June, which is today. I know that once the Bill is passed, we will have an earlier signature motion to ensure it is enacted straight away. I do not want to delay the Bill at all. The Minister of State has given us a very comprehensive...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: The Senator is twice as important.

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: As somebody whose grandfather was a garda for almost all of his career a long time ago, I echo those comments. It is important the message go out from this House that we fully support our gardaí in everything they do in trying to keep our streets and communities safe. There is an element of parts of urban areas, in particular, that are not quite no-go zones but are heading in that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I apologise for my absence earlier. I had to attend a vote in the Seanad. If I ask questions that were already asked, I apologise in advance. I was tracking the meeting until I had to go off to vote. I thank Ms Byrne for her opening statement. I am conscious that this is our third engagement on the retail post office network in the past month or so. We had the IPU appear before the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I just wonder why we are duplicating services, particularly those that involve in-person transactions. The movement of things online is going to keep happening whether we like it or not. We cannot tell consumers that they have to go down to the post office to top up their Leap cards when they can do an automatic top-up online or whatever.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: However, it is a useful facility for an Post to have to bring in footfall and so on. In terms of the 920 post offices, do we have any idea how many are stand-alone offices as opposed to offices within retail premises, such as, for instance, those located at the back of shops? That is probably plenty of questions to keep Ms Byrne going for now.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: It is more about hearing from you than hearing from me to be honest.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Gerry Horkan: I know the split. I think there are approximately 50 company-owned post offices-----
