Jerry Buttimer: ----- and Ms Graham will understand fully where I am coming from. This morning I received my copy of the BusConnects Cork - Sustainable Transport Corridors Report. I appeal to Ms Graham today, in the context of the Dublin transport plan - and I have had extensive engagement with many councillors and was quite happy to have Senator Seery Kearney attend the committee today - that we would...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: How does one follow that? "Whispers informed strangers" is one of my favourite lines from Heaney. I commend the ambassador of Poland on the wonderful generosity of the Polish people and their government in the ongoing horrific Ukraine situation. I thank the ambassador who is very welcome to Ireland. I ask the Leader to facilitate a debate on the national development plan 2040.The...

- Committee on Public Petitions: Engagement with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (28 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome our witnesses and thank Mr. Justice MacCabe for his contribution. I thank GSOC for the work it is doing. Indeed, I pay tribute to the work done by members of An Garda Síochána during the Covid period, when they were at the forefront of our State's response to Covid-19. Very often they had to perform tasks that in ordinary times they would not dream of doing. I thank...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Engagement with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (28 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: There seems to be a theme recurring because the director of administration, Ms Healy, has been in correspondence with the Committee of Public Accounts. Mr. Justice MacCabe has spoken today about the complexity and the resourcing issue. If we asked a question on the level of resourcing, and it may not be a fair question or Mr. Justice MacCabe might say it is not pertinent to today's...

- Committee on Public Petitions: Engagement with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (28 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank our witnesses for being here today. I ask that we request the committee secretariat to have a further discussion in private about the outcomes of today's meeting. I thank Mr. Justice MacCabe, Ms Logan, Mr. Hume and Ms Healy for being here. If I had read my reports right, I should have looked at table 4 before I asked the question about table 5. I wish Mr. Justice MacCabe every...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Engagement with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (28 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: That is a worrying trend that we should come back to again. I have one final question. In table 5 on page 7 of the briefing we got for the meeting today, it is stated that 4,615 queries were handled in 2021. The number of allegations dealt with in that the complaints were closed was 2,902. Am I to extrapolate from that that almost 1,700 cases are not closed? Am I right or wrong in that?

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the students and staff and thank them for being here. Democracy and politics are very important in every aspect of their lives. I wish them well in being here today. I seek a debate on vaccines beyond Covid. This is World Immunisation Week. Ireland spends 0.2% of its health budget on immunisation. That figure would alarm and amaze all of us. If it does not, it should because,...

Jerry Buttimer: All of us are acutely aware, as members of the committee, of the importance of this Bill. It should be put on the record of the House that there has been extensive consultations on this Bill. I thank Michael Kingston for his engagement with us. I ask Members to read the report on pre-legislative scrutiny and the heads of the Bill from the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications....
