- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: There is something I forgot to say. I am sorry to interrupt, but I am terrible and I always do it. The fear there always was with AHBs was the fact that down the line, the AHB owns the asset. What happens at that point in time? It is something that arises regularly at council meetings.

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Well put.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I saw where they opted for the housing bodies. Basically, they said the AHBs could get their hands on the finance quicker than they could, so it all happened faster.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Now, there is an onus on them. They have more resources to do this and they want to do it. However, they are doing this in the middle of not having enough of a maintenance budget to deal with the housing they have. How long do I have left, Chairman?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: Obviously the big need to fill is that we do not have enough units, and that gives us no wriggle room to be able to deal with necessary issues as regards transfers and so forth. The witness spoke about dealing with specific cohorts and so forth where the AHBs may have needed additional resources. An awful lot of people blame local authorities and say they have not delivered for them because...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: You cannot make up for mental health services and addiction services. Unfortunately, this is a more difficult job than it was 20 years ago.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Inflationary Costs in the Construction Industry: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: When I talked earlier about local authorities, it was not that I was expecting a rip-roaring row. It was more that I had seen there was some element of pushback, but it has been said there is enough room for everyone to survive because we do not have enough houses. We will move on from there. I was going to deal with what Ms Hegarty spoke about regarding the necessity for economic...

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 37. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the details of her engagements with the hotel sector to ensure that price-gouging is stopped; the plans that are in place to address the soaring hotel costs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [32462/22]
- Special Educational Needs: Statements (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are discussing special needs and disability and I agree with many previous speakers that it is all about delivering for our citizens as regards their rights and entitlements in education and any other area. They should not be discriminated against on the basis of their special need or disability. Let us reverse this and deal with the issues parents face in an awful lot of cases....

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 12. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will provide an update on the status of his plans to address the rising cost of and limited access to public liability insurance; the detail of his recent engagements with an organisation (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30058/22]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Coverage (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: This is not the first time we have spoken about public liability insurance. We all know it is a disaster. Many companies and organisations cannot get public liability insurance at all or if they are offered such insurance, the premium is terrible. What engagement has the Minister of State had with the industry on this? We all know that we need certain things to happen, some of which are...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Coverage (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: I appreciate some of the work that is being done. In fairness, this issue was thrown to the Minister of State when the area was already a disaster. We are dealing with issues now that should have been dealt with years ago. I am delighted to hear that more players are coming into the market and would be grateful if the Minister of State could provide an update on that. If it is not...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Coverage (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is the best news I have heard in relation to public liability insurance but the Government must make sure it happens. I have spoken previously about insurance for those in the entertainment sector. At this point in time, none of the companies that offer bouncy castles for hire has insurance and that needs to be rectified.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Policies (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We all know the situation we are in. We are not taking away from what has been done by the Government to date but the fact is we are in a crisis and a disaster, to use terminology that is interchangeable now. We need to see action. It is no more than what any of us hear when we go around canvassing. No one is very interested in what has been done because they are more interested in what...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Policies (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: We all accept we are in a situation that is far from perfect. We know that interest rates, inflation rates and all the rates one would not want to rise are rising. Unfortunately, the consumer, householder and citizen can feel all of this on a day-by-day basis. We must be able to offer them something so they can get through it. We all accept that employment, particularly highly paid...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Policies (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: 27. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will introduce an emergency budget and targeted measures to support struggling households following a research paper (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30059/22]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Policies (16 Jun 2022)
Ruairí Ó Murchú: There has been a significant amount of to and fro today arising from the fact that a huge number of people are now in serious financial difficulty due to rising costs. I accept the Government cannot do everything but we need to see it doing more. We want to see an emergency budget, but I will not get into that now. We could talk about the Economic and Social Research Institute, ESRI,...
