Haulage Industry (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: Apart from issues such as VAT and rebates, the cost of fuel in general is of concern to companies which use vans and other large vehicles. One action we can take is to ensure the best level possible will be set in the legislation which is being debated by the European Parliament and which relates to new limits for manufacturers in respect of van emissions. The level currently under...

Haulage Industry (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I do not know where the Minister got that impression.

Haulage Industry (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I do not know what the Minister is implying but I take offence at what he said. I have never supported anyone who has been involved in fuel laundering. I want to make that clear. The Minister should withdraw the remark he made. There has been an insinuation that I am doing something illegal and that is just not acceptable.

Haulage Industry (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: Well, what was the Minister saying?

Haulage Industry (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I do not know how the Minister can be impressed, particularly as I have not imparted any knowledge to him.

Public Transport (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: In budget 2012 the Government announced cuts of approximately €22 million for CIE and to the rural transport scheme. Irish Rail, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann carried much of the 8% loss in funding, resulting in fare increases and the further downgrading of services. Routes were closed, while others were limited and changed to adapt to the lower funding level. Our poor and, in many places,...

Public Transport (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I am coming to it. Budget 2013 is being framed an I am asking that we not erode services further. Will the Minister of State give an indication to this effect and that there will not be major cuts? Many of the services and workers cannot take any more. In my area bus services have been cut, with significant consequences. I urge that further cuts not be made.

Public Transport (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I promote public transport and I believe in it. If there is to be a reduction of 20% in the subvention over the next couple of years, it will have significant repercussions. We should not reduce our public subsidies as there will be significant consequences. It is important for us to engage with trade unions, which represent workers, and the Minister of State should meet those...

Smarter Transport (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I support the idea of smarter transport and I support this Bill. I would like to see a big debate on this because we all know the environmental advantages we can get from moving towards supporting electric and hybrid cars and moving away from fossil fuels, as well as other issues in terms of protecting this economy. It is very important for environmental reasons that we have a good debate...

Smarter Transport (3 Jul 2012)

Dessie Ellis: It is not a question. Given the Minister is planning to introduce legislation, we can have a big discussion around this and the way forward. There will be huge savings for the whole economy and also in terms of the environment.

Household Charge (28 Jun 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I am opposed to the household charge, the way it is being administered and that it does not take account of people's wealth and those who are very wealthy in society. How does the Minister propose to collect the charge from those who have not paid it? He has said that 60% of householders have complied and 40% have not. It is one thing to talk about going to court and placing the burden of...

Household Charge (28 Jun 2012)

Dessie Ellis: No. We tell the truth all the time. With regard to the Department's advertising campaign in respect of this charge which was not properly dealt with by the company concerned, what was the cost of that campaign?

Household Charge (28 Jun 2012)

Dessie Ellis: We are in favour of a wealth tax. We have already said this.

Household Charge (28 Jun 2012)

Dessie Ellis: I apologise.
