Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Circular Economy as it relates to the Waste Sector: Discussion. (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am absolutely happy to do that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Circular Economy as it relates to the Waste Sector: Discussion. (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: This is the final question and I thank the Chair for his indulgence. The CCMA makes it very clear in its presentation that in order to push forward with the national waste management plan, it needs the co-operation and collaboration of all involved in the waste sector. Is it saying local authorities need more power to ensure the deliverables that they have been tasked with pursuing over the...

Marie Sherlock: I am asking the witnesses if they need it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Circular Economy as it relates to the Waste Sector: Discussion. (9 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: Other than the voucher scheme, planning and licensing and the deposit return scheme, what else is the IWMA lobbying the Department on at the moment?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Childcare Services (2 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister of State for coming into the House. I will start by offering my support to all those providing an early years service in this country, and pay tribute to all the providers and staff who go in day in, day out to do their very best for the families that they look after. Many services are distressed about the necessity and expense of requiring a chartered accountant. With...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Childcare Services (2 Jul 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am extremely conscious that when I talk about the powers of oversight and the powers of investigation that I do not want a chill effect to go out to the vast majority of providers that I said at the start of my statement who do exceptionally brilliant work. I think there is an issue and a gap here - a shortfall - in terms of the lack of requirement for a clear admissions policy.I hear what...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (27 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: A huge thanks to Ms Lawlor, Ms Eastwood and Professor Stevens for attending this morning. There was certainly a very powerful call by all three of them with regard to dealing with the reality of drug use in our societies, rather than continuing with the fiction that our criminal justice system has. I am particularly interested in police culture and how police forces around the world have...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (27 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank Professor Stevens. Perhaps Ms Eastwood would like to contribute.

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (27 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: Ms Lawlor made a very powerful point about how drug testing needs to be available in all parts of communities. Ms Eastwood spoke about the experience in Wales. I would like to hear more about who approaches the drug testing centres and what types of drugs are involved because that is crucial in terms of understanding.

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (27 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I will put the question to Professor Stevens and Ms Eastwood. My concern is that only some groups of people may approach drug testing centres. How do we ensure that everybody who needs to approach drug testing centres do so?

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (27 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: My question concerned drug testing centres. Where they have been rolled out comprehensively within communities, who has been approaching the drug testing centres and what type of drugs are we talking about? We would hope that all parts of the community and not just certain drug users would approach drug testing centres.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I am conscious that Natasha O'Brien is in the Houses of the Oireachtas today. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to her and the other women who have come forward to tell their stories about how badly our criminal justice system is letting down victims of the most shocking violence against women and girls. There may be an appeal, so we cannot say too much but there has to be review now of...

Seanad: Health (Assisted Human Reproduction) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (20 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I move amendment No. 7: In page 44, to delete lines 21 to 29 and substitute the following: “(a) an appropriate medical specialist has stated in the specified form that— (i) the child is due to undergo medical treatment, or suffers from a progressive disorder, which in the opinion of the specialist is likely to cause a significant impairment to the child’s...

Seanad: Health (Assisted Human Reproduction) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (20 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I would like to think that arrogance is behind us. I would like to think that arrogance is beneath any Minister for Health, but unfortunately it was an arrogance we saw last week. It was regrettable that the Minister was calling out the ethics of the clinicians who brought those concerns to us, particularly when many of them gave enormous public service to this State while sitting on the...

Seanad: Health (Assisted Human Reproduction) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (20 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister for his response. First, I am much more inexperienced legislator than he is but in the past four and half years I have spent here, I have seen the Government table amendments to Government Bills. We see this on a regular basis. We all faced a deadline of last Monday for amendments to this Bill and it was absolutely open to the Minister to bring forward an amendment to...

Seanad: Health (Assisted Human Reproduction) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (20 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I have purposely tried not to personalise this, and I have not mentioned names today. However, unless there is any doubt, it is worth saying it on the record that the Minister received a letter and many emails from clinicians with concerns about the issues I have raised. An email was addressed to the Minister at the start of this week. It was from three clinicians, namely, Dr. John...

Seanad: Health (Assisted Human Reproduction) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (20 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I will be pressing the amendment.

Seanad: International Protection, Asylum and Migration: Motion (19 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I thank the Minister for coming to the House. There is no doubt that there has been an increase in the numbers coming to our shores and the European Union area in recent years, but we need to be very clear about the intent behind the migration pact. This pact is not driven by humanitarian responsibility towards those seeking shelter and refuge on this island or across the EU. If it were,...

Seanad: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Jun 2024)

Marie Sherlock: I will speak on amendment No. 13. We welcome that there is provision in the Bill that the board would include the appointment of a person who, in the opinion of the Minister, has knowledge or experience in matters relating to the interest of employees and that there will be representation of employees or representing the interests of employees. The Minister will be aware of the...
