Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Jimmy Harte: The best place would be in the colleges.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I asked a question on-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Students and lecturers in Letterkenny Institute of Technology state students will drop out shortly because they are awaiting a decision. Many people in local authorities and VECs have dealt with applications over the years and have local knowledge and expertise. Is there a reason such people could not be placed in third level institutions to deal with stressed students? These students...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Jimmy Harte: In that case there is a risk of falsifying the photocopies, which is the simplest thing in the world to do. To bring this back to my first point, if people with local knowledge were involved they would be more aware of people and would know to ask for originals. If one asks for a photocopy of a tax clearance certificate there is no way it is 100% verifiable. I am in the insurance business...

Seanad: Youth Unemployment and Public Policy: Address by Professor Christopher Pissarides (Resumed) (8 Nov 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome Professor Pissarides. The phrase, "That is no country for old men", comes from the poem, Sailing to Byzantium, by William Butler Yeats. He was a Member of this House and it is appropriate his lines were spoken. I agree with the Senator that this is not a country for young people at the minute and neither is Europe a continent for young people. The rates of youth unemployment in...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I share the Senator's concerns about Electric Ireland. I hope the Minister can come to the House. We heard a report on RTE stating the mobility allowance scheme has been withdrawn in respect of many people in serious medical circumstances. Ms Emily O'Reilly has said the Department of Health is acting illegally regarding the scheme. I do not want to blame the previous Government although...

Seanad: National Dementia Strategy: Motion (24 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister of State. I am also delighted to welcome the members of the public who are in the Gallery. They have an interest in this subject and I thank them for giving up their time. I am glad the Minister of State has grasped the concept so well and I know he will be on top of his brief. It is very important the national dementia strategy is put in place as soon as possible...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Review of Irish Coast Guard Service: Discussion (24 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: On the MRCC building in Dublin, according to the information I was given, no risk assessment of this building was done. Mr. Mullen can correct me on this but I understand that in the past 16 to 18 months since personnel have been there, there have been outages and issues with the power and the fire alarm. Anyone who works in the Coast Guard service will know that utmost priority is given to...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Like Senator MacSharry, I congratulate Sligo Rovers on their magnificent achievement in winning the premier league after 35 years and I agree with his call for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to come to the House to talk specifically about soccer in this country. A club like Sligo Rovers, which qualifies for Europe, can market Sligo as a town and area. I hope it draws a top...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the debate on local government reform. Senator Terry Leyden has left the Chamber but I thank him for sending eight councillors from County Roscommon to County Donegal. The number of councillors in County Donegal has increased by eight while Roscommon has lost eight. That reflects the distribution of population, with County Donegal experiencing growth and County Roscommon...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Ambulance Service (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I thank the Minister of State. The call was received at 7.31 p.m., and I assume that it took three minutes from the call being logged to the ambulance being told to mobilise, as well as two or three minutes in travel time. However, the ambulance arrived at 7.55 p.m. Assuming the ambulance left at 7.35 p.m., it took approximately 20 minutes to get there. Perhaps I am incorrect, but the...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Ambulance Service (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I hope so.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Ambulance Service (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kathleen Lynch. Last week in Letterkenny, an injured jogger had to wait 48 minutes for an ambulance to come from the hospital, which is about 1.5 km from where his injury occurred. It turned out that the ambulance came from Carndonagh, 35 miles away. Luckily, the jogger was not seriously injured but he could have been. He had to lie on the road with...

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Cash the Fianna Fáil cheques.

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I am aware of the residents of Greenfield.

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Sinn Féin is implementing the Tory cuts.

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Senator Ó Clochartaigh does not live near the Border. I was born in Lifford and lived there for many years. Strabane is as much a part of Ireland as Galway is but the residents of Strabane do not get the same treatment. The residents of Greenfield House have been told they will be turfed out. The same councillor-----

Seanad: Primary Care Centres: Motion (10 Oct 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Sinn Féin is implementing Tory cuts. We are implementing cuts imposed by the EU but in the North Sinn Féin is part of a government. We are trying to solve the problem, but in Northern Ireland Sinn Féin is complicit with the Tory Government. Sinn Féin should not blame the Tory Government, it should blame its leaders and the people who are implementing these cuts.
