Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Creidim go bhfuil an Rialtas ag úsáid an straitéis mar leithscéal chun an toghchán a chur siar. Ba mhaith liom tacaíocht a thabhairt don Seanadóir Alex White. Iarraim ar an Aire an leasú seo a ghlacadh. B'fhéidir go bhfuil comhthéacs difriúil i gceist ag an am seo. Ba cheart don Aire tacaíocht a thabhairt don leasú seo.

Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Más rud é nach n-aontaíonn an tAire leis an leasú, as seo amach an bhfuilimid ag rá go mbeidh téarma seacht mbliana idir gach toghchán údaráis? Nach exceptional circumstance é seo? Má tá an tAire ag rá go mbeidh téarma níos faide, seacht mbliana idir gach toghchán sa todhchaí, cá bhfuil an daonlathas?

Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Senator needs Fine Gael policy.

Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Aontaím le cuspóirí an údaráis - forbairt an teanga agus forbairt eacnamaíoch agus sóisialta na Gaeltachta trí mheán na Gaeilge. Tá locht mhór sa Bhille seo, áfach, tá an Rialtas, agus Fianna Fáil go háirithe, ag úsáid na straitéise teanga mar leithscéal chun an toghchán a chur siar agus mar sin ní aontaím leis an Bhille. Chaill an Rialtas seans obair an údaráis a...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Today's edition of The Irish Times carries a very serious report about the return of third level fees in the Colin Hunt report. Senators will remember that the Minister, Deputy Batt O'Keeffe, appointed Dr. Colin Hunt to carry out a long-term strategy report on third level education. Last week I again asked the Leader for a debate on the future of third level education. What is our vision...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: -----so that fees would not return in the lifetime of the Government. Let us get a grip.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Thank you, a Cathaoirleach. The Irish Times reported that Dr. Colin Hunt sees no alternative to the return of fees. It is time that we, as public representatives, represented the public view on third level education in this House. We need an urgent debate on the matter. There is a chance that our views might form part of his proposal if we have the debate.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: There was a problem with the business paper last week.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is the Fine Gael position. Well done.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We called for a debate on higher eduction, which is different.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The debate must be much more focused.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (17 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Stick to the Order of Business.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (17 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Very soon we will have the publication of a report on third level education by Colin Hunt yet in this Chamber we have not yet had a debate on our vision for third level education. We should debate that issue before Colin Hunt deliberates. In this morning's Irish Independent there is an article about four Dublin colleges considering a merger. That may be a welcome development but a debate...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (17 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Education must form part of that infrastructure and it is dangerous to hand over that big area of importance to this country to the likes of Colin Hunt without Members of this House, who are from every part of the country, having our say on our vision for third level education. I look to the Leader to come forward with that debate once and for all.

Seanad: Confidence in the Taoiseach: Motion (16 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: What we need is a vision and a solution and I do not see either. I see just one prong of a solution, that is, the banking solution. If we look at what has been advised, we will see that we need solutions on the banking front, the fiscal and budget deficit front, the economic front in terms of jobs and competitiveness, on a reputational front and with regard to the social crisis. On the...

Seanad: Confidence in the Taoiseach: Motion (16 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Policy was based on the one-horse economy of construction which led inevitably to a collapse in tax revenues.

Seanad: Confidence in the Taoiseach: Motion (16 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Taoiseach, when Minister for Finance, should have been adequately experienced to identify the signs of economic collapses that have been presented in the reports. However, he failed spectacularly as Minister for Finance and was negligent in his duty. Unfortunately, he still fails to inspire. I wish him well and hope he can make changes for the best.

Seanad: Confidence in the Taoiseach: Motion (16 Jun 2010)

Fidelma Healy Eames: After incredible lobbying.
