Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Deputy Ellis, from Leitrim.

Seanad: Housing Aid for the Elderly. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. He is aware I have embarked on a new policy document on a new approach to ageing and ageism. Housing for older people is a major aspect of how we look after older people in the future. My research and work on the ground shows frustration at the lack of choice of housing for older people. The vast majority of older people wish to live in their...

Seanad: Housing Aid for the Elderly. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: We need a middle ground. If older people are not able to cope at home, live alone, need medical help and do not wish to go into residential care, they should live in middle-ground sheltered housing. The Government needs a policy on sheltered and support housing. I do not blame the Minister. He must not take this personally.

Seanad: Housing Aid for the Elderly. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: I thank the Minister of State.

Seanad: Cancer Services: Motion. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Cancer Services: Motion. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Tim O'Malley, to the House. Senator Henry's motion states "in view of the fact that cancer is the second most common cause of death in Irish women and that death rates from cancer are higher in women in Ireland than in women in other European countries". When one considers this issue coldly and clinically, it is clear that if one can pay for a private...

Seanad: Cancer Services: Motion. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: I tabled a motion on the need for a cervical cancer screening programme at the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party six months ago and I will raise the matter again in the next two weeks. I am embarrassed to contemplate that if one has money, one can have a mammogram tomorrow or the day after, but those who cannot afford to pay for it for themselves will use the income they have to buy shoes and...

Seanad: Cancer Services: Motion. (22 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Cancer Research in the United Kingdom has published figures that indicate that 75% of breast cancer occurs in women over the age of 65, yet a bureaucrat in the Department of Health and Children decided to cut off the age limit for screening at 65. I do not care if the research at the time indicated that was appropriate. If those in the Department did their homework properly they might have...

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Roche, back to the House and wish him the best of luck during Second Stage of this Bill. As he stated in his speech yesterday, our planning system works well at the local level and in the local framework. It is up to date and it is ideal for that, but it does not work adequately for infrastructure which brings a major public benefit to a wider area or to the...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Poolbeg will become a mini-city. This is bizarre planning. The waste to thermal treatment system is fair if the refuse used in the incinerator is strictly domestic. However, my rationale for supporting the local residents is the existing road infrastructure will not cope with the increased traffic. I wish the Minister the best of luck with the legislation. It is a great tribute to him. As he...

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Will the Deputy Leader call for an urgent debate on the role of women in society and business? Around the world we celebrate International Women's Day today. I draw the attention of Members to the fact that on the Government side of the House this morning there are 15 men and four women, but on the Opposition side there is only one lady——

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: ——and 11 men.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: As we all know, half the members of society are men and half are women. Men and women think differently about issues. We need Leinster House to be more representative of women and I call for an urgent debate on the role of women in society. The Opposition needs to get more women on its side, it is a disgrace.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: The Senator should never call anyone an old woman. That is ageism.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (8 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Mar 2006)

Mary White: Senator Feighan should have been here.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Mar 2006)

Mary White: This has nothing to do with the Bill.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Mar 2006)

Mary White: The Minister already knows that. I told him.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Bill 2006: Second Stage. (7 Mar 2006)

Mary White: She knows what she is talking about. The Senator does not.
